If you or your friends/family is dealing with Harvey clean up, the water is full of nasties. Hand washing, showering and washing clothes may not be enough to protect against tetanus, which is found in animal feces. So HEB is giving free tetanus shots to anyone who asks for one. Pharmacy hours are generally not the same as store hours, so be sure and call your closest HEB for hours and availability.

Offensive in places like NYC, not here except for emigres from NYC. Say it's a slur around here and you get blank stares. "Against who?"

(61,692 posts)Still privately owned, I believe. Been around for decades. They hire very talented people for their upper management positions, frequently from outside of Texas. You'd think they would hire from mostly Texas universities, but I've met VPs educated at University of Michigan, Swarthmore, Dartmouth (IIRC), etc. They can afford to help keep their customers alive by vaccinating them.
They have a tendency to drive out all other store chains. No where else to shop except HEB, except little mom & pop stores.

(20,165 posts)They are usually the first big grocery store in a town, so yes, they put some mom & pop's out of business, including my great grandmother's store in Yoakum, TX. They are still family owned, rather than beholden to Wall Street to hit certain marks every quarter. They treat their employees pretty well. I had a roommate who had worked there over 10 years.
And then there's this:

HEB took advantage of Walmart's driving wages down, though, and some dept managers saw it reflected in lack of commitment of employees. I wonder if anything changed in permitting higher hourly wages to create a little competitiveness for better-paying jobs.
Yes, they are an excellent company.

(25,224 posts)And on Saturday when gas took 90 minutes, they had five workers out there directing traffic and making sure everyone got to the pumps safely.
My brother worked for them when he was in college, they paid him well over minimum wage. He earned enough to buy a car and pay part of his tuition.
ETA: I've lived in my neighborhood since 1994 and several of the employees have been working since then. One of them is disabled.
