Since The Election My TV Habits Have Changed Drastically

I seldom watch the news channels anymore, except for a few M$NBC shows, Rachel, Lawrence, Joy on weekends (& whenever she fills in) and now I catch Ari once in awhile. Other than that I keep up to date here on LBN & my feed on FB & Google News.

I watch a lot of HGTV & DIY Network, which I never watched before. I know what open concept, subway tile & ship-lap are now, things I knew nothing about before November.

I watch a lot of Nat'l Geography, Nat Geo Wild & Animal Planet. I watch The Smithsonian, History & Discovery Channels fairly often too.

We have Netflix, but I pretty much only watch stand-up comedy specials or documentaries there & occasionally I find a music concert. (I also watch a few concerts on AXS)

I watch all the Cardinal (baseball) games.

I usually just watch movies on the premium cable channels, with a few series tossed in if I find them entertaining.

PSA - Don't watch QVC or HSN if you have a buzz!

I have found I enjoy my TV a lot more if I'm not yelling at it.

My TV watching has been the opposite - I can't seem to tear myself away from watching the slow-motion train wreck. But it's not good for my sanity.

I know because she texts me or messages me on FB throughout the day, mad about something or somebody she saw.

I just wish more people would do the same.

I don't happen to own a TV but I watch plenty of stuff via the internet. I have Hulu and Netflix and Amazon Prime. Plus, if I want to watch MSNBC, they put up most of their shows on the internet a couple of hours after they're broadcast. And when some sort of breaking news occurs local TV stations often go to live streaming.

It's more than possible to keep up with what's happening without watching news channels constantly.

Oh, and read books. Fiction and non fiction. Both for pleasure, but fiction gets you in to other lives, and non-fiction gives you in-depth information about stuff.

It's not at all that TV is inherently bad, but too many people let it control them, not the other way around.

Oh, and the other truly wonderful thing about not watching regular TV is no commercials. Really.

3. Our television plays movies, that's all it does.

No cable, no satellite, no broadcast. The only television commercials I see are posted here on DU, usually because people like them.

We have Netflix, a neighborhood Redbox, DVDs I find in thrift stores, and occasionally DVDs we purchase new of movies we especially enjoyed.

Cable and satellite are especially bad because part of your subscription fees go to FOX News and other scum whether you watch them or not. Currently Fox collects two or three dollars a month for every cable or satellite subscription.

4. Same for me - lately I'm watching lots of movies

My Verizon Fios membership gives me 3 months of HBO channels free in the summertime.

They take it away at the end of September so I've been living it up on all the great HBO movies this summer.
Can't make myself watch any serious news, except occasionally the Rachel Maddows and Lawrence O'Donnell shows.

Yes I get some of those channels you mentioned also, and they have awesome documentary/educational shows.

If I hear Cheeto's voice on the TV, it gets turned off immediately.

9. Do you like British/ UK detective novels?

You must read Ian Rankin, he is a Scottish crime writer and his detective Rebus books are a blast!

14. If you go to the Ian Rankin site it will give you his Rebus series in order

It is best to read them chronologically as you will understand the character development better. Funny, riveting, full of wicked turns and suspense, and Rebus is a farking hoot. I hope you enjoy them. Great on a cold winter night.

8. Outside of big events like hurricanes and the like, cable news is useless

Hell, news in general is useless. Local news doesn't fare much better.

It's boggling as many people here seem to watch it as dedicated as they do.
