It will be fighting with other agencies to look under the pillows of the federal sofa for change that has fallen out of someone's pocket. The Republicans are going to dry up the budgets of just about every agency that actually helps people.

Jeff Sessions is an openly racist piece of shit, did you see the GLEE on his face yesterday when he got to announce his violent war on brown people known as DACA ? He was bouncing up to the microphone, watch it again, you will want to reach into the TV screen and slap the prick.

(16,855 posts)So the "Cajun Navy" are awesome, my brother in law and several cousins were amongst them in Houston helping folks get to shelters. As amazing as those acts are, why the hell are we not appalled that our nation's neighborhoods are forced to rely on help from neighbors and other citizens when disaster strikes?? For what we've wasted on DoD contracts like the F-35 that still can't fly in the rain, we could have an entire fleet of boats and Coast Guardsmen/women ready to answer the call when storms strike and there would be no need for civilian response! Sadly I think the powers that be want to celebrate civilian sacrifice and donations to charities because they don't want a strong government. It's advantageous to them to portray government as weak and ineffective. Just my 2c!

(1,168 posts)really. But, I'm a member of a swiftwater rescue team. We were placed on standby for Texas on the 29th. It is over 1800 miles from here to there and if there are qualified rescue teams closer then that is good news for those stuck and waiting for me and my team to get everything ready and travel that distance.
By the way since we are certified (2A) Swiftwater we are required to maintain a degree of readiness. It is not wise to just go running into someplace and get in the way. What we were told was to expect 8 days in the field in primitive conditions and to be self-sufficient (food/shelter/fuel) for the duration. We are btw volunteers. My company agreed that if we were deployed I could go without a loss of wages. The amount of training required to be on a rescue team is significant and in all honesty we only go on about 4 or 5 calls per year (for water) mostly when the ice gets too thin. To have people trained and waiting around for the possibility of such an event is not done anywhere I know of in the world so I don't understand why not having this service in the US is a problem.

(16,855 posts)My brother in law, who went to Houston for the flooding, is also swiftwater rescue trained. He's a fireman in Baton Rouge and you'd be surprised how frequently his unit is used for such tasks.
