Politics plays into infrastructure maintenance and construction, regulations for building codes, how communities are shaped. Where the good zip codes are as opposed to the so-called bad zip codes. How that impacts jobs, types of housing, jobs, schools, emergency services - all political.

Highways, evacuation routes, shelters, preparation... funding - both state and federal.

How poverty can and does determine who will survive because of the necessary resources needed to just up and go. Wealth disparity plays into this. Low wages, lack of jobs, lack of affordable - and decent - housing. All political.

Healthcare - can you afford your medicines and pay for gas and lodging if you evacuate? All political. Because your state government could be one that works to keep the economically depressed ...depressed. So could your federal government.

Will shelters have needed resources to handle medical emergencies? That includes laws, regulations, education, the effects of poverty - all political.

There is no aspect of a natural disaster that isn't political because they involve people - their lives, their homes, their jobs, the environment, infrastructure, etc.. How resources are distributed prior to the disaster impacts how much resources are available during the disaster, and all too often, after the disaster.

Recovery is political. Otherwise, why would there be fights to get needed funds to rebuild? Help and rebuilding should be a no-brainer.

Much like equality and opportunity should be a no-brainer. Yet they are not.

Why? Because of socio-politics, socio-economics. Economics is political. Social issues are political. Governing, which determines how well/poorly both state and federal react to a disaster, is political.

Even if you remove your own personal concern for the well-being of people out of the equation, as you have done - a hurricane is STILL political.

Lives are at stake. They are a cable news channel. This is a huge national story. Turn the channel if you don't like it.

BTW, this story you don't think they should be covering so much has huge political implications.

but I kind of agree with you. It is important to know about the hurricane, but both CNN and MSNBC have reported on nothing else during the hours last night and this morning I've been watching.

Of course this hurricane is monumental and worth reporting on thoroughly, and it's important to get information out to the public about what's going on and what they should be doing to protect themselves and their loved ones. Of course we are worried sick about friends and relatives who are in danger, and we want to know where the hurricane is heading and how much damage it's likely to do.

But. This nonstop reporting from people riding around in cars showing us boarded-up buildings and people standing on the beach telling us how windy it is cannot be all that helpful. Couldn't cable news devote, say, 15 minutes of each hour to mentioning other news, including political news? Has NK launched another missile, for example? It seems to me that cable news is exhausting themselves to find things to broadcast about Irma--and again, I'm all for massive coverage of this terrible disaster--to the point of showing a lot of "filler" material that is more noise than signal.

Let the brickbats fly!

Sat Sep 9, 2017, 01:49 PM

--this Harvey and Irma will probably help the GOP. Scott is looking good. Doing everything possible to get everyone out who wants to go--using school and city buses, getting gasoline in, keeping the stations open as long as possible by promising police escorts for station employees, getting hotels to waive no-pet policies, etc., etc., etc.

If the Rs can handle the aftermath as well as the preparation, this will not be a situation where the Ds will benefit (unlike Katrina.)

Sorry to burst your bubble.
