I'm sorry but this juxtaposition needs to be pointed out.
Yes of course I feel for the people in the path of these hurricanes but when I see all the outpouring of care and coverage all I can think of are some not so distant events.

When their entire world turns into a violent bloody nightmare parents in Central America send their children - actual children - on thousand mile journeys to come here.
The chants and talking points are repeatedly fed via rightwing media:
They're criminals!
The will bring disease!
They will overwhelm our schools!
Grown ass adults actually went out and screamed at bus loads of basically temporary orphans. They went to town halls demanding that these CHILDREN not be accepted anywhere in their communities.
Syrian refugees
Mostly the same. I remember first seeing the refugees and just feeling my heart sink. Parents looked at one another and said, "We just can't stay here". Most had already fled into the cities due to the devastating drought in the countryside. They oils only take what they can carry and set off on thousand mile journeys via any number of means including shoddy boats run by horrifically bad people. Instantly the cries of TERRORISTS!! MUSLIMS!!! MUSLIM TERRORISTS!! rang out. I don't know why but I was shocked by it.
Here, gladly I've not heard that.....unless the Mayor or any official is a person of color THEN they attack endlessly.
