The hurricane that lasted forever...

Certainly, this was one of the largest and most dangerous hurricanes in our lifetime. Cuba took the brunt of its force before it headed for the Keys. But, by then, it was never able to recover the huge stadium-like eye that it showed from space cameras...

==============================
The system that would become Irma forms off the west coast of Africa on Aug. 27, the day after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas. The new storm quickly strengthens as it moves west across the warm Atlantic Ocean, getting its name on Aug. 30 and becoming a hurricane on Aug. 31.

Cape verde hurricanes spawn off...Cape Verde, which is hotter area.
They usually develop in Aug/Sept, the mid-point of the hurricane season, and are bigger and more powerful than earlier hurricanes.
