....who were en route to the US from Europe when air traffic shut down. There were about 40 wide body aircraft who landed in Gander, at the time a town of only 9,000 people.

Churches, schools, gymnasiums, etc. were all set up to house the people on those planes for as long as they needed to be there. A couple of friends of mine were returning to New York what that happened. They spent four or five days there.

My friends were escorted to a church, where they found the pews converted to beds - every 10 feet or so was a blanket and a pillow and a few other items they would need for the undetermined length of their stay.

Nothing out of the ordinary for the residents, it's just what Canadians do.
