years ago and now the water level in the lake has dropped showing the
old stumps.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,366 posts)I've driven across I-90 numerous times in the past and this lake, east of the Snowqualmie Pass, was often very low and the bottom is indeed covered with stumps, such that it looks very much like that picture.

A couple pics from Google images that result from a search of that lake with the word "stumps" added;
So this is not new in the least. The lake has been like that for at least 30 years.

(57,406 posts)As soon as I saw that, I said to myself, "what new dam?" and began a Google search to find out where it came from. The picture shows up all over the place, but I had given up on finding the source.
Thanks.

(11,175 posts)What I'm guessing from your post and the subthread is that, 30 or so years ago, it was decided to build a new dam. The area that was to be flooded included an old forest. All the trees were cut down, the dam was built, and the site of the former forest was flooded. This photo might have been taken after the logging and before the flooding, or it might have been taken recently, when falling water levels re-exposed part of the area that had been flooded.
If that guess is correct, then the caption is accurate, but it's readily open to the misinterpretation that a new dam is about to be built.

(574 posts)I saw that pic and my first thought was "I didn't know we were getting a new dam in Oregon." It hasn't been that long since Oregon decommissioned a dam or two on the Rogue River.

Calculating
(2,955 posts)No different than what the plague does. The difference is we have some people who are smart enough to see the big picture, and we have means of population control. The question is whether we're smart enough as a species to listen to them, or if we'll continue on with our 'unlimited growth' mentality until we ruin the carrying capacity of our world. Unlike the plague, a new host isn't available short of traveling lightyears into space.
More people=Less resources and a lower quality of life for all.

Anyone paying attention knows that we've already doomed ourselves and its "biblical" measure is coming all too quickly. Recent humongous hurricanes in Texas and in Florida are going to become yearly events. And the futile rebuilding process will cease. Yes, it's more than fucking sad, it's devastating. We're coming to a stark new reality.
My 30yo son and his g.f. have made the very sad but wise choice to never make me a grandmother. 😥

My neighbor is an Antarctic biological oceanographer (had to go to Wiki to get her full description) whose research focuses on the role that zooplankton play in marine food webs and the global carbon cycle, and how they are affected by climate changes.
