Trumps divisive political career is reshaping a key and previously apolitical part of his business empire.
Trump-owned hotels and clubs have long made money by holding galas and other special events. Now, their clientele is changing. Trumps properties are attracting new customers who want something from him or his government. But theyre losing the kind of customers the business was originally built on: nonpolitical groups who just wanted to rent a room.
This summer, 19 charities canceled upcoming events at Mar-a-Lago a major blow to that clubs business after the president said there were fine people among white supremacists, neo-Nazis and members of the alt-right protesting to preserve a Confederate statue in Charlottesville. Dozens of other clients have left since Trump entered the 2016 presidential race.
On Saturday, the latest cancellation: A triathlon for charity at Trumps Charlotte golf course, called Tri at the Trump, was abruptly scrapped. Sign-ups were down this year, the organizer said, due to concerns over the name.

(45,403 posts)it's like a social and status thing for those types of people.
I've done the low cost fundraising events that attract college students and working people, and that's great. But to get millionaires it has to be in a fancy location with all sorts of fancy stuff to make them want to show up and write big checks.
Since they're going to do it anyway, they should choose locations that don't personally enrich the president.

(5,801 posts)but they should have cancelled at any number of stages during the campaign, as he expressed strongly racist and misogynistic views.
Let alone when he was installed. Let alone because of any number of horrific actions between the installation and Charlottesville--making a mockery of cabinet appointments, destroying environmental protections, making insane tweets, working to destroy the State Department, embarrassing the U.S with his rude behavior abroad, etc. etc. etc.
Just pointing out that any organization who truly cared about what the U.S. is supposed to represent would have cut ties with this monster long ago, especially once he--gag--became a significant player in U.S. politics. It's one thing to turn a blind eye to reprehensible behavior by a private citizen, quite another to do so for a leading candidate, nominee, or officeholder for one of the major political parties.
