Trump planning to defile July 4th with dictator parade

(CNN) President Donald Trump has always loved a good parade.

While meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Monday, he praised Macron for his Bastille Day parade, which he saw during a summer visit.

"I do want to say that I was your guest at Bastille Day," Trump said, according to a transcript of remarks from the White House. "It was one of the greatest parades I've ever seen. It was two hours on the button, and it was military might, and I think a tremendous thing for France and for the spirit of France."

He told Macron he wants to have a similar parade in the United States to show off his country's military force.

"We're going to have to try and top it," Trump told Macron. "But I came back (from France), and one of my early calls were, I think we're going to have to start looking at that ourselves. So we're actually thinking about Fourth of July, Pennsylvania Avenue, having a really great parade to show our military strength."

Such a show of military pageantry, however, is often associated with militaristic regimes trying to prove their might and would be uncommon in the US, which has shied away from such large-scale displays in recent decades.

I'm sure there are Trump Humpers in the military but I don't think many brass would want to do any kind of a parade. My gut is you won't see one come next July 4th.

The gussied-up militaryish uniform strikes me as highly likely, though. The tailor should make sure he gets paid up front.

He tried this for the inauguration. He was told no and got the flyover instead.

Typical inner city roads cannot handle the weight of large military equipment; especially DC (which was basically built in a swamp).

Yep... After looking...

"The then-president in waiting, Trump reportedly requested tanks and missile launchers at at his inaugural parade. The Pentagon turned him down, the Huffington Post reported.
'They were legit thinking Red Square/North Korea-style parade,' a source told the news publication.
...

"Trump's request was denied, the Huffington Post said, because the show of force was considered bad optics. Having tanks roll down the streets of D.C. was also determined to be structurally challenging. Tanks like the ones Trump is envisioning weigh 100,000 pounds.
The incoming president wanted a flyover for his inauguration, but that was called off, the Huffington Post said, because of bad weather."

He'll likely be blocked. Much as right-wing authoritarians might be wowed by this stuff, a lot of conservatives are already scared of his "the generals" and not at all sure they won't wake up some morning to find they've taken over. An unrealistic but genuine nervousness.

Disapproval of a military presence is not just a liberal thing, it is America's very deeply established tradition.

And 2018's midterm elecctions would come along very soon after.

I hope that Trump's military parade idea is shot down.

But it's simply historically inaccurate to say that "disapproval of a military presence" is a "very deeply established tradition." Military parades, or at least parades featuring a military "presence" are not at all uncommon on July 4 in the US. Many of our early presidents, including Adams, Jefferson, and Madison, reviewed one or more July 4 military parades. And while DC hasn't hosted a July 4 military parade in decades, a military "presence" on July 4 remains a major part of the holiday in DC. For example, the Obamas hosted several July 4 events for members of the military.

Moving outside the realm of July 4, military flyovers are popular at sporting events and as part of other ceremonies.

...iirc, the streets would be ripped up by the weight of the tanks and shit. The city is not built for that.

I also believe that the top brass understands they serve a democratic republic and its Constitution, not some asshole dictator.

I've seen any number of 4th of July parades in my various hometowns, and of course there is a military aspect. I have no problem with that. You got your Boy Scouts, your local National Guard, lots of veterans, some jeeps, and sometimes a tank. We had some difficulty inserting the Veterans for Peace into the parades during the Bush years, but the mayor was on our side. Afterwards there's a helicopter the kids can climb into and so forth.

What you don't have is something out of the USSR, Red China, or Nazi Germany, with Dear Leader adorned in gold braid giving the stiff-arm salute. You know that's what Trump wants.

Oh, heck, I wouldn't even require him to march. Commandeer a jeep (or one of the Shriners' little cars) and let him drive the distance. Make it a different theme every week. One week he can dress up like George Patton, the next like Napoleon, the next like Bozo the Clown...
