. . . this is actually unfair to Archie Bunker, who (as a fictional character), despite his flaws and ignorance, was portrayed as ultimately having far more character and basic decency than does Donald Trump.

. . . but the Archie Bunker character, as he was portrayed on the show, wasn't a terrible person.

Donald Trump, meanwhile, is a terrible person who is also the President of the United States.

. . . if by this you mean that "ignorance" is the cause of, or the reason for, Trump's miserable character.

Donald Trump is a profoundly mentally defective person, a malignant narcissist and a sociopath. The bigoted statements he spews are merely downstream of his upstream derangement. He says what he says because, in his twisted mentality, he has (correctly) reasoned that saying such things will generate from those who support him the adulation -- the narcissistic "supply" -- that he so desperately craves and, indeed, needs for his mentally perverted existence.

Donald Trump doesn't have enough interior character to be a true bigot or a racist. There's nothing inside the man whatsoever. That such a thing is President of the United States says far more about the people of the United States, and those who still support him, than it does about Donald Trump.

When Donald Trump is in a room by himself, there's nobody there. That, in a sense, is his "excuse." What is the excuse of those who support him?

Archie Bunker was, at least, sort of a loveable bigot. I, and millions of others every week, could at least stand to watch him spew his bigotry.

I can't even watch Dotard. The reality of the situation makes it too painful. He is despicable.
