to appeal to some people by, as you say, telling them exactly what they want to hear.

And when he fails, as he often does, he blames others.

This is a complex translation, since the German language likes to use meaningful compilations of nouns to create new nouns with meaning."Hoch" means "high". "Stapler" is something like a forklift driver, who stacks things. So the direct translation in from German to English would be a "Highstacker". The meaning being that he stacks statements high above facts. More closely explained is he exaggerates to the point it is out of context and becomes a lie.

This is a subtle differentiation from a "con man" (which is a broader term correctly applied to him), it details more how his con works. Sometimes I wish we had these terms in English, because it might be easier to communicate what the problem is.

When I think it through, he was just parroting all the right-wing bullshit Faux News and others have been brainwashing these folks with for years, but with some new excitement and populist layers added on. He allowed and encouraged their authoritarian, racist, xenophobic and misogynist natures to come to the surface without reproach, and is still doing it.

Most of those characteristics were somewhat suppressed during the Obama years because we had a semi-functional Dept. of Justice and other government agencies that supported human rights.
