People kneel in church when they pray, men sometimes kneel when they propose, and traditionally knights and courtiers would kneel before royalty. The way I see it, when Kaepernick et al. kneel for the National Anthem they are calling out the disparity between what the flag stands for in principle and what it increasingly stands for in practice. They are showing a profound respect for the constitution and equality and justice. And the flag. Trump and the alt-right know they are being outclassed, outmaneuvered, and outsmarted, and all Trump can do is sputter vulgarities.

(2,495 posts)on their level. It seems to me the talking point should be that far from being a sign of disrespect it's a sign of deep respect for what this country truly stands for. They're not disrespecting the flag, they are disrespecting Trump and everything he and his followers stand for.

(46,682 posts)I mean, why didn't anyone complain when Tebow kneeled during the anthem? The answer: Because this is a conservative framed issue.

(7,808 posts)This whole kerfuffle is just another opportunity for the reichwingers to express their outrage over nothing.
If they really want to get upset, I have a list of a couple hundred asinine things their fuhrer has said and done. I'll be happy to share it.

In football, quarterbacks take a knee to quickly end a play. The return team player takes a knee in the end zone to have the football placed on the 20, the agreed-upon starting line.
All Americans now need to emulate the brave vanguard, and "take a knee" during our anthem, or during a town hall meeting's recitation of the Pledge, to "quickly end" governmental and police injustice.
Let's get our nation back to our Constitution, back to our "agreed-upon starting line."
Let's really MAGA by getting her back to our true and decent values, the ones symbolized by stars, stripes, and song.

Taking a knee is not a sign of disrespect at all. Just the opposite. It's a gesture of respect. Always.
That has always been true. The players are showing their respect for the principle, not just a look-see gesture. They understand the principle of freedom. The flag, in recent times, has often become a symbol of oppression. That is what they are saying, I think.
