Chelsea Manning, the former US soldier who served seven years in military prison after instigating one of the biggest breaches of classified data in US history, has said she has been barred from entering Canada.
On Monday, Manning posted on Twitter a report from the Canadian government that identified her as a foreign national who has not been authorized to enter Canada due to prior convictions.
So, I guess Canada has permanently banned me? wrote Manning one of the most prominent whistleblowers of modern times.

The letter, addressed to the countrys minister of immigration, said Manning had attempted to enter Canada at the official border crossing near Champlain, New York, late last week.

(7,178 posts)Their country, they can choose who enters. The article does say that her appeal is being considered. I'm sure there will be more to come on this in the future.

(32,929 posts)The custom & border patrol web site has a lengthy descriptions of what will make/keep you inadmissable for admission to the US. I'm pretty sure that a felony conviction in your country of origin would get you stopped at the US border. There is an appeals process as well. Just as Manning is thinking about her appeal, I bet you one glass of ice tea, there are people appealing their denials.

(12,640 posts)It's an old law, too. Back in the late 60's, we'd be asked at the border crossing when we used to go up to Vancouver BC for a weekend soccer tournament my brother's team used to play in every fall.

We put down a blanket,
and as we began to get naked,
a zillion little crabs came up out of the sand.
We grabbed our stuff* and ran to the car.

By 'stuff' I refer to clothes, etc.

(8,692 posts)There had been issues with bad behavior by crust punks at that beach which was right behind $5 million dollar homes, then they ended up in the paddy wagon with a bunch of crust punks and other scofflaws. If I recall correctly they were both charged with trespassing, indecent exposure, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, open container and resisting arrest. They also charged her with public urination because there was a damp spot in the sand they believed could only have come from a woman. They were able to get rid of all the charges except for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. She will go to her grave denying that she peed there.

(6,324 posts)Canada is very strict on who enters- both for immigration purposes and just for visits.
I had a friend who was barred entry for a misdemeanor DUI that was pleaded down to wreckless driving 15 years before, and a ticket he just paid 5 years before for operating a commercial vehicle without a CDL. They said the DUI was the equivalent to a felony no mater what it was pleaded down to and the later ticket indicate he had not "rehabilitated" himself.
Canada is really strict.
Most people have never looked at what Canadas immigration requirements are. They are very strict. Most Americans would never qualify to move there as legal residents or to try and get citizenship.

(8,692 posts)Landed immigrant status or family sponsorship can be pretty tedious. Of-course there doesn't appear to be anybody stopping people from just walking over the border and claiming refugee status at the moment.

(2,990 posts)My husband is Canadian and I am US born. He sponsored me for my permanent residency. Cost quite a bit of money, tons of paperwork, over a year wait (couldn't work or get health care in that time). They scrutinize every minute of your life and relationship and they aren't playing around.

I guess she was going to be looking for "really long term parking" in Montreal.
Mannings support team have responded with astonishment to the suggestion by Canadian authorities that her prosecution under the US Espionage Act was equivalent to treason under Canadian law.

(3,145 posts)A buddy of mine was barred and refused rehabilitation to go on trips with his wife and son to see her family in Ontario because while his primary conviction was larceny he also was convicted of being in possession of a weapon (a knife) during the commission of a crime.
Apparently Canadian immigration told him that they could grant rehabilitation on the larceny charge but any weapons charge was a dealbreaker.
