Obama said at an event for the Beau Biden Foundation on Monday that when he brought Malia Obama to start her freshman year at Harvard University, he was proud of himself for not crying in front of her.
"For those of us who have daughters, it just happens fast. I dropped off Malia at college, and I was saying to Joe and Jill Biden that it was a little bit like open-heart surgery," Obama said, CNN reported Tuesday.
"I was proud that I did not cry in front of her. But on the way back, the Secret Service was off, looking straight ahead, pretending they weren't hearing me as I sniffled and blew my nose," he said. "It was rough."
Obama said that while dropping his eldest child off at college was difficult, he called the experience "a reminder that, at the end of our lives, whatever else we've accomplished, the things that we'll remember are the joys that our children and hopefully way later, our grandchildren bring us."

(14,941 posts)It also occurred to me that I couldn't imagine dropping them off at boot camp for military service.
My pride in them and excitement for them about their new adventure was definitely took a back seat to the nearly overwhelming grief at what felt like a huge loss.
I love President Obama. He gets me.

I'm wondering what was meant by how someone with daughters would react differently than someone with sons. It seems like he deliberately didn't say children, but, rather, daughters.

Sometimes, ya just gotta wonder how difficult they work to take exception to one of the most benign statement ever uttered by a father...

And look at the size of that hand!

(999 posts)Dropped my daughter off at Ohio University in August. The amount of pride, joy and sadness that was running through me was very hard to control. He is a husband and a parent first. Damn I miss his leadership. Events like last Sunday wouldntbhave occurred the way they did under his watch. Puerto Rico wouldn't be suffering like it is either.
