That's what us kids sang in the liberal state of California back in the early 70s in place of the flag salute. That's when "duck and cover" became an Earthquake Drill"

(9,901 posts)My country tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died!
Land of the Pilgrim's pride!
From every mountain side,
Let freedom ring!
My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love.
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture fills
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song.
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.
Our father's God to, Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King!

(9,714 posts)and I always wondered when I was a kid why we would sing about loving him. He died about five years ago, a kindly old man with a large, happy family. But I learned "God Save the King" before I learned "America," anyway. My parents were socialists (the good, Democratic sort), Anglophiles, and monarchists. I remember listening to reports of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation on the radio (we didn't get a TV until 1954).
"O, God, our help, arise,
Conquer our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Her our hopes we fix,
God save the Queen!"

(26,241 posts)And, the melody of 'The Star Spangled Banner' was taken from a song called 'Anacreon to Heaven', which is an old English drinking song, extolling the virtues of drinking wine.
Hmmm.... I'm seeing a pattern, here.

My Country 'Tis of Thee (America) (lyrics only)
Written by Samuel Francis Smith; the tune used for this song is "God Save the Queen", the British National Anthem.
My country tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died!
Land of the Pilgrim's pride!
From every mountain side,
Let freedom ring!
My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love.
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture fills
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song.
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.
Our father's God to, Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King!

(17,984 posts)It was either a TX thing or faded out in the early 80s. Boy do I miss those duck and cover drills. Made me feel safe.
