(11,559 posts)While a better sitting President, BHO is still going to have to go some to match the legacy of President Carter's subsequent years. Single-handedly raising the profile of HFH, for example.
I'm not saying he can't, rise to the occasion, just that there are big shoes to fill. Thank you for all that, Mr. President. I've long thought there would never be a retired President with as much grace, humanity, and just plain goodness.
Happiest of birthdays to you, President Carter.

(59,498 posts)One really good thing to take away from his story is that doing what you believe in - even if you lose politically - will make your legacy something you can be very proud of and - as with Carter, more and more people will see you for the good, purposeful person that you are. There are few people who seem as comfortable in who they are as this very good man. Not to mention, with President Jimmy Carter, the country got a wonderful First Lady, who to this day seems to be his partner in all the good he does.

(31,261 posts)The country would be far, far better off if he had defeated Reagan in 1980. He was the first Democratic President to get blown up by the far left, they savaged him in 1980 - and look where that has gotten us.

(54,295 posts)They let themselves get caught with Bill Clinton in 1992, got their scam back together in 2000 and 2004. That was such a disaster that no Republican was going to win in 2008 even if he walked on water that he then turned into Cheval Blanc 1982. But after 2012, they refined their scheme to the point where they put someone in the White House who was even worse qualified than Warren G. Harding and ten times as corrupt.
Carter was an early victim to the notion that Republicans didn't have to win elections to grab the White House.

(31,261 posts)After the next Democrat gets in office to clean up the developing cluster duck, the scammers will come up with a way to question that Democrat's adherence to progressive causes and policy. They always figure out a way to move the carrot just far enough in front of the mouth to trick newbie voters and idealists.

(31,261 posts)Enough people fall for that scam to set progress back 15 years each time. And when a Democrat finally get in to clean up the mess, they accuse the Democrat of not being progressive. Never ending cycle, that is why I advocate ignoring them and working to get more Blacks and Hispanics voting regularly to join true progressives of all races and economic levels who have been working to move the country forward for 75 years.

(5,275 posts)Ah, back when we had human being Presidents, the good old days.
May you have many many more....the oldest verified human was 127 when she died. Almost all the longest lived are females but there should be room for such a decent just man.

(38,414 posts)Brock Adams, Jimmy's Secretary of Transportation developed a program for automobile safety in 1977 ..This included front seatbelts required and other improvements like additional lights, ..and so on. Of course Carter was ultimately behind these improvements. The starting program, seatbelts in front, for all cars, was followed by many other mandatory safety improvements. Carter and Adams wanted to be sure it would be implemented, so in order to give the manufacturers time, I think the date for first mandatory safety measures was in 82..that gave time for the changes to be made in new cars...............................This was the start of a wave mandatory safety improvements that have greatly improved auto safety...mandated by the federal government.
PROOF...PROOF POSITIVE THAT CARTER SAVED MORE LIVES THAN THE BUSH PRESIDENTS KILLED IN WAR..
Hit the link below and look at some of the information provided... IN 81 OR 82, THERE WERE APPORXIMATELY 51,000 DEATHS ON THE HIGHWAYS...LOOK AT THE NUMBERS CAREFULLY..IT IS AN EASY LOOK.. IN 2014, APPROXIMATELY 35,000 DIED. A REDUCTION OF 33 % in deaths......with a 40 percent increase in U.S. population..1980, 200 million, 2015,.315 million......Jimmy Carter started this program and made the safety improvements mandatory............
Other improvements followed..and those were mandatory also...Please, hit the link, and you can see the numbers....Carter's safety program saved more lives than the Bush Wars killed. The link is a list of motor vehicle deaths in the U.S. from the 1901.. till 2014 or 15..hit link directly below to see chart..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_motor_vehicle_deaths_in_U.S._by_year
So, if you know someone hurt bad in an auto accident, survived because of the seat belts/ air bags and all the other safety improvements from 1980s...and you think that those friends and family would be dead....well Jimmy Carter and Brock Adams his Transportation Secretary started the programs that saved their lives..
This of extreme importance...Carter started a program that ultimately saved tens of thousands of lives...People that you may know are alive and well, because Carter saw into the future, that this was important and possible...We hear so much of hate and killing...Well, this President initiated something that saved lives and improved recovery from auto accidents....Jimmy Carter is a great man...and you may know someone that is around because of a program that he started..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
malaise
(268,701 posts)as well. I always use a seat belt. I know several folks who survived because of a seat belt.

(19,186 posts)to ever grace the White House, in my opinion. He was too good for this country, and they vilified him for it. Ronnie Rayguns tore him apart, and now Ronnie inhabits the lowest level of hell, where he can swap notes with all the other Republican politicians who got their tickets punched to hell immediately after dying.
President Carter will head in a completely different direction. He's a fine man, someone this country could be proud of.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PRESIDENT CARTER!
