(21,863 posts)Last I heard him associated with any denomination it was Southern Baptist. Evangelical is a very broad term. In the broadest sense it can mean any protestant organization that doesn't baptize infants - but hold to adult conversion.
You can assume that all Evangelicals are politically conservative.

(13,462 posts)What about what about
Jimmy Carter parted ways with his Church a few tears ago, btw.

(11,097 posts)Jimmy Carter disassociated himself from the Southern Baptist Convention but he still teaches Sunday School at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.
It's hard for people not in a denomination like Baptists to understand the Church polity but the Southern Baptist Convention is a voluntary organization of Baptist Churches. The leadership of the Convention cannot dictate anything - much less theology - to local Churches or members. The home page for Maranatha Church has a pretty good explanation of Baptist ideals of independence of local Churches and the important Baptist ideal of "soul competence," which basically means no one gets to tell me what I must believe.
There are a lot of us who attend Southern Baptist Churches who disagree with very nearly every statement that comes out of the Convention. The Convention, quite simply, has no relevance to us. Nevertheless, we are all Evangelicals. Politically liberal Evangelicals but Evangelicals none the less.

(30,736 posts)"evangelical" to describe fundamentalist Christians. I just call them fundies. Evangelical is too polite a term for religious nuts.
People who follow the four gospels are evangelicals. They might belong to a conservative or more liberal denomination, but if they believe the gospels they are evangelicals. Drive past all sorts of churches and you will see it in the name posted outside.
I don't have any inclination to be delicate about what I say to these nuts. I won't refer to them by the polite, generic term "evangelical." If they insist on sticking their noses in and parading their hate and ignorance, I will answer them back.

(11,256 posts)And there is a large block of progressive /liberal evangelical churches. They just aren't politically loud. Or paid attention to by our fascist media.
Read the Slacktivist blog for more about the differences.

(36,783 posts)Political Christians rather than Christians of faith.
They support Trump who says he is so perfect that he does not need Christ or his forgiveness.
Like today's evangelical/religious right supporters, Trump is a Political Christian, not a Christian of faith.
Evangelicals/religious right are easily able to spin their beliefs for political expediency.
The Donald who does not have to ask Jesus for forgiveness.

(10,252 posts)Do you think Trump is a happy man? I think not. He walks around deeply insecure, deeply wounded by even the most insignificant criticism. Filled with anger and envy for those, who are better liked than him (mostly everyone else). I'm glad that I don't have his mindset. History will not be nice to Donald Trump. He will not be revered like Jimmy Carter, FDR, JFK, or even Eisenhower.

(9,426 posts)He is already making life miserable for people who are about to lose their health insurance. Next we will be taxed to help the wealthiest people. Poor, poor Don the Con. He thinks claiing to be rich means everyone respects him - WRONG. He must see people on a daily basis who have very little, yet are happier than he is. Happier marriages, his is a disaster with a miserable "wife" who despises him. Adult "kids" who are borderline stupid, yet think they are smart. A daughter who has to re-arrange her entire face to feel good about herself, yet now looks like a blow up sex doll. I doubt is ANYONE would want to trade places with him. His life is despicable.

Yes, I went there. Note to Secret Service: I do NOT want him assassinated because I don't want him to be seen as a martyr. I just hope he dies of natural causes, like clogged arteries.
