The players took a knee BEFORE the anthem to very loud boos.
The players then stood up for the anthem.
Rather than respectfully singing the anthem, the fans decided to start cheering loudly when some jets flew over and fireworks went off at the words and the rockets red glare. They ended their disrespect for the anthem with the now-gratuitous cheering and screaming over the final bars of the anthem they so revere, drowning out the final bars.

(1,303 posts)let alone cheer.
PLEASE NOTE that the Star-Spangled Banner is our National Anthem or hymn; when it is played at a public assembly you should join in singing the National Anthem along with principal singer or orchestra whose function is to lead, not entertain, the assembly. For this reason it is inappropriate to applaud the singing of the National Anthem. It is also inappropriate to make or use sophisticated "concert" versions of the National Anthem

Some teams whine that it is disrespectful I think it is a wonderful tradition.

(24,392 posts)dont apply to them. Not only that, but they hold the CONCEIT that they can make up rules that dont exist, then get their panties in a wad when someone disrespects their non-existent rules.

(24,121 posts)and btw, there's not a DAMN thing wrong with athletes kneeling during the national anthem, as it's words only apply to a select privileged group of U.S. citizens.
Maybe when our country is truly the "land of the free" for ALL, the players will all stand. Til then... #TakeAKnee

(2,146 posts)Some boo because they don't understand taking a knee protests racial injustice and police brutality. I cut them no slack, but note that ignorance is in some cases curable, though it may take generations.
My bigger issue is with those who boo because they understand exactly what it means. Those people are wielding verbal tiki torches in this current time of darkness, and making it darker in the process.
No answers, just a depressing observation
