(9,714 posts)One of the greatest human beings ever to hold the office of President of the United States. He is a shining example to us all.

(65,212 posts)President Carter after his death? Certainly he would deserve such a designation far more than others who have been sanctified.
I am not only glad we still have him with us despite his advanced age, but also that he is still able to be active and actively involved in trying to make the world a better place, at both the macro and the micro level.
And BTW, though she does not get the publicity he does, Rosalynn Carter (with whom I share a birthday!) seems to be as active as President Carter is in such activities and also deserves to be honored for her work.
(He is 93; she is 90. Both are amazingly involved in charitable action.)

(31,261 posts)I am a southerner. The three greatest politicians that we have ever produced were Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Reuben Askew (Governor of Florida who stood before an all White University of Florida stadium and told them that not only must the university welcome in Blacks, but integration in public schools was a moral obligation). They had their faults, but they were fucking brave when being brave was potentially costly for them.

(31,261 posts)He fought for civil rights in the south at a time when doing that was a political death wish. He pushed for renewable energy when the country really needed a leader to take that courageous stand. He got mortal enemies, Sadat and Begin to shake hands and produce a peace that has outlasted expectations.

This is an enormous honor, and I can't think of anyone who deserves it more. What a terrific portrait.

(5,901 posts)And he was quoting Dylan, "He not busy being born is busy dying." The Allman Brothers helped fund his early primaries. He was an officer and a nuclear physicist on Zumwalt's first nuclear sub, and he actually worked for peace and was successful. He said he'd never lie to the American people, and he still hasn't. He said the American people get the kind of government we deserve and we have. We didn't deserve Jimmy. He was light years ahead of the Washington/New York politicians/media, including Ted Kennedy. I know it must have stuck in Teddy's craw when Jimmy wrote in his '76 campaign book that he decided to run for president when he was governor and met the Washington Democratic officials who traveled to Atlanta. Jimmy found them unfocused and not all that bright. And when he was elected POTUS and chose not to serve hard liquor in the White House, well, Sally Quinn not only banned him from her salon but ridiculed him openly, as if he cared. Jimmy Carter's presidency was sabotaged not only by Republicans, but by the entire DC establishment. Dumb fucks.

(19,140 posts)he is my favorite President of all I've lived through. That would span Truman through Tr......, I can't bring myself to type his awful name, but you know who I mean.
He was too good of a man for this country. They didn't deserve him, let alone appreciate him. If there's one person who embodies everything an American should be, it's Jimmy Carter.

(11,084 posts)On the list of ex-presidents, Jimmy Carter sets the best examples, exhibits the deepest-held principles.
He's 93 years old and recently held a hammer in his hands for Habitat for Humanity. He remained humble after he left office, a rare happening in Washington, D.C.

Went from a great American like Jimmy Carter to the dregs of humanity with Trump.

(100 posts)Remembering the vitriol and hatred thrown at him during his presidency and in the nearly 40 years since (hell, I'm getting old here - for most of the world he is a historic figure like FDR), I could posit the thought that the US didn't deserve him, whereas it definitely deserves a monstrosity like Trump.
If God's culmination is the schizophrenic mess that is the United States in 2017, then he is a messed-up Deity.
