Mississippi is one of the "brownest" states in the country. Less than 60 percent of the state's population is white. Hattiesburg, which is probably the largest city in the state currently at risk from Nate, is majority African-American.

My friend from Mobile and his family are coming here today. He and his wife have a 6 week old and 2 year old, it will be different for a while!

I am afraid those two corinthians are inviting friends and the group will be stronger when they get there tonight! I predict that Nate & COrinthians are going to be stronger than weather experts predicted.

At worst this will be Cat2 - more likely a high end Cat1. Storm surge plus high tide and rain will be a bigger issue but it is moving very fast for a hurricane

I am about 90 miles north, straight line from Pensacola.
we are getting rain storm bands, as Nate's eastern side starts swirling onto this area.

Happily we are not in any flood potential area. Just wind and rain, looks like.

Our Dry Side is currently raining, but not hard. The Weather Channel is telling me we only have a 20% chance of rain. That means we will get all 20%! Lol

My buddy from Mobile has a house on the East side of Mobile Bay, on the bay. Being close to the entrance and Dauphin Island the water won't pile up as much as it will in the back of the Bay by downtown. As it stands it will come over his bulkhead. It is a cinder block house so he just sandbagged the doors.

It's only a category 1 storm. We were prepared to have a hurricane party at my waterfront home to drink and watch the waves if it was forecast further east. Oh well...

Category 1 storms for Gulf Coasters are nothing we worry about. It does clear the tourists out and makes travel easier though.

But, "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Normal Times anymore." These are maps of historic patterns.

"As hurricane season begins to wind down, the threat of a hurricane lessens for some parts of the Gulf Coast." "Cold fronts often push tropical systems toward Florida and away from Texas and Louisiana in October and November."
