(2,248 posts)But if NK wants to nuke the U.S and barely has the range to reach the west coast, what does Moron loose as Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii have all gone Democratic in the last five presidential elections! Sure, wipe out some democrats. But don't mess with Alaska though!!

(2,770 posts)Neither Republicans nor Putins Russia like anything about us. Putin and Bannon get chaos. Trump gets his electoral college win and revenge on those who oppose him. Being in California, Ive thought about this. Its the first time Ive had to realize that my country doesnt value me one iota because I didnt vote for the sitting president.

(82,849 posts)I mean, as long as the popular media are working so hard to normalize the unthinkable, they should have some good graphics and groovy tunes.

(83,721 posts)I don't see where they are normalizing this. The quote is from Mattis. Donnie, quoted before his Generals saying this is "The Calm Before the Storm." The president wants this.

(82,849 posts)In fact, it's a complete abandonment of the responsibility a news outlet has. I'm uninterested in any mewling about "objectivity" when we're talking about a course of events whose easily foreseeable end result is the extermination of millions and a wholesale poisoning of the planet.

(83,721 posts)It flashed on the page for a moment. I was not here to see the rest of the broadcast. I did NOT see all they had to say anymore than you did. Please stop attacking me, stop taking your anger out on me. WE are all upset with the possibility that life as we knew it is may well be gone, our survival is questionable.

(83,721 posts)Get some context on what CNN said about Mattis before you talk about normalization by the media. I never saw the report on what they said, I had left the room. Please give me some context to what they said since you obviously saw it to speak in detail. I hate them for giving us Trump and YES they normalized him then. I will never forgive them or those that voted for trump and third party...because it was obvious then...anyone was better than Hillary....wrong!

(3,827 posts)Defense Secretary James Mattis says the U.S. Army "must stand ready" in the face of continued provocations by the North Korean regime.
While delivering the keynote address at the Association of the U.S. Army's annual meeting on Monday, Mattis outlined the current strategy in North Korea for the U.S. military, saying "it is right now diplomatically led, economic sanctioned, buttressed effort to try to turn North Korea off its path."
He conceded, however, that "neither you nor I can say" what the future holds for the regime.
"There's one thing the U.S. Army can do, and that is you have got to be ready to ensure that we have military options that our president can employ if needed," said Mattis.
Mattis embraced the current diplomatic approach to the crisis, including the UN-led sanctions on the regime supported by the international community.

(20,815 posts)"wants" this, there should be cooler heads prevailing in the military; Kelly, Mattis and the like. This is not a dictatorship and the military does and should have a say. And what few at least somewhat reasonable repubs are left, (McCain, Corker, and their ilk) should be scrambling to shut him down and stop this shit. As in joining with the military honchos and declaring Article 25. Seriously.

(6,042 posts)I had always though that Truman had made an informed decision to drop the atom bomb on Hiroshima and then Nagasaki, that he was the person in control.
As vp he did not have information he probably should have had to be prepared to be president on Day One. As president Truman had a learning curve. He trusted the military-they had successfully waged war.
Truman did not know the the bomb to be dropped was so massively different that it could obliterate a city and its civilian population. The target, Hiroshima, was described to him as a military base (there was a base in Hiroshima).
The generals knew what would likely happen to the civilian population. According to the NPR piece Truman did prevent a third bombing. He publicly took responsibility but the public narrative was a kind of coverup. A false history.
If what was reported is true, it raises questions about our current situation vis a vis N Korea and the power of the military players in the current administration.
The show also detailed the story of a whistleblower in the military who question the power of presidents to be the sole decision maker on on a nuclear attack-and was punished for his hubris in questioning the powers that be.
We are in our current situation because facts have been withheld from us and because, although we have a democratic republic, we do not have the power as "the people" that we need.
In short, we need more democracy and less republic, and we can't have democracy with information-the actual facts, not the fake.
