(2,050 posts)I live 15 miles from the Bangor sub base, the Keyport weapons facility, the Bremerton shipyard and Manchester Fuel Depot.
In the other direction is Joint Base Lewis-McChord and the State Capitol in Olympia.
Across the Sound is Seattle and it's port, Boeing Field and the Boeing facility's in Kent, Auburn and Frederickson, and Seatac international Airport.
Farther north is Everett with it's Navy base and submarine ELF communication facility, Boeings main aircraft assembly facility and north of that is the Whidby Island Navy Base.
I've probably left out a target or two but I've known for decades that all I'll hear is a loud bang and maybe see a flash of light and that's all she wrote.
California also has a target or twenty on NK's list but we are closer than Cali, if they launch one at the coast I think we're first on the list.
Mr Mueller can you please hurry????

(2,050 posts)I'm in Olalla, grew up in the area.
I love this area but Gig Harbor is trying to annex everything around here to suck out tax money, Purdy now has Gig Harbor addresses for it's businesses.
But it's been nicknamed "Gag Harder" which fits it to a "T", in another twenty years it will be as crowded out here as Tacoma, then I'll move out your way.
Or maybe farther.

(32,628 posts)When this threat is over, make plans to move to somewhere safer. Not Florida or Texas either. Most of the midwestern states are safe from major catastrophes like fires, floods, hurricanes and earthquakes. (knock on wood)
In the meantime good luck with everything.

(32,628 posts)We had a tiny tornado once about 10-12 years ago. I think they called it a micro-burst.
But there's plenty of room here and we won't run out of water.
Property taxes and cost of living are relatively low compared to the West Coast.
Check us out!

(45,426 posts)because it sounds like many fled for more liberal states (including me) and then those rust belt states elected Trump.

(32,628 posts)If Pennsylvania hadn't been hacked last year we probably would have gone blue again, but it's hard to say.
We definitely went blue for Obama twice and I think we split one and one for Bush Junior.
The voting record should be a lower priority when deciding where you want to relocate to. You should consider affordable housing availability, quality of schools (if you have kids), types of jobs available and companies hiring, transportation, seasonal temperatures, climate in general. Great, livable neighborhoods (lots of diversity) with local stores and also shopping malls close by when you need them.
In Pittsburgh we check out in all of those categories. We're a great sports town too.

(620 posts)Spent most of that time working toward getting out of that horrid place. Not just because of the weather, but also because of the economy, crime in the cities, and sorry but the people. Just wow.

(32,628 posts)But in western PA (I live in Pittsburgh) we haven't had a blizzard for at least 20 years.
We get Nor'easters (big snowstorms of 20+ inches) maybe once every 4 or 5 years. This is way different as you go farther east where they probably get one or 2 big storms every year. It seems most of the really bad weather skips us or we just catch the edge of it. On the other hand we do get lots of rain here. The ground saturation is always good, and we don't have droughts except maybe a couple weeks in July or August. It's not hot/dry enough to turn our grass brown usually. I can't even remember when we had water rationing here, but maybe we had one back in the early '90s, for a couple of weeks. This is entirely different from what you guys in California have been going through.
Temperatures rarely go below 0 in the winter. Summer temps range in the 80's and sometimes get up above 90 but only in the afternoon. It always cools down at night. For the past 2 or 3 summers I didn't put my window air conditioner in because I did't need it. A few summers before that I had the air conditioner in but only used it for 2 or 3 days, then left it off. We have 4 seasons here, we shovel snow in the winter and cut grass in the summer. If I have any complaint it's that we get a lot more cloudy days than sunny, but the temperatures are comfortable.
In my opinion fall is the best here, especially October. We've got amazing fall colors on the trees right now.

(41,831 posts)Do not send your Thoughts and Prayers for the victims of the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, what they needed was simple things like warm blankets, bottled water, and food, even instant Ramen.
THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS do nothing for DISASTERS other than get in the way of the real help that is needed.
