Building upon the success of the Clinton Global Initiative commitments model that transformed modern philanthropy, CGI U is grounded in the belief that no one is too young to make a difference and requires all student participants to take concrete actions to solve global challenges. Since its first meeting, CGI U has brought together more than 8,700 students from more than 940 schools, 145 countries, and all 50 states.

In addition to President Bill Clinton, founder and chair of the Clinton Foundation, and Chelsea Clinton, vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, featured participants at CGI U 2017 will include: Mayor Martin J. Walsh, City of Boston; Joseph E. Aoun, president, Northeastern University; Madeleine K. Albright, former Secretary of State, chair of the Albright Stonebridge Group,  chair of the National Democratic Institute; Daryl Davis, musician/race relations expert, Lyrad Productions;Paul E. Farmer, M.D., Ph.D., co-founder and chief strategist, Partners In Health, and Kolokotrones university professor of global health and social medicine, Harvard University; David Gergen, faculty director, Center for Public Leadership, Harvard Kennedy School; Alan Khazei, founder and CEO, Be The Change, Inc.; David Miliband, president and CEO, International Rescue Committee; Ibtihaj Muhammad, Olympic medalist, activist, and entrepreneur, Louella;Vivek Murthy, M.D., 19th Surgeon General of the United States; M.A. Sanjayan, CEO, Conservation International; Amy Ziering, documentary filmmaker, Chain Camera Pictures, among others.

Friday, Oct. 13, 2017

-  “Code for Impact,” presented by CGI U and the Clinton Foundation’s Climate Initiative: This codeathon will challenge student designers from across disciplines to develop a digital prototype that improves or facilitates energy efficiency in metropolitan areas and urban centers. The event will be judged by Chelsea Clinton as well as Donnel Baird, CEO and founder of BlocPower; John Cleveland, executive director of the Boston Green Ribbon Commission; Gwen Ruta, senior vice president of climate and energy at the Environmental Defense Fund; and Carl Spector, environment commissioner, City of Boston.

-  Opening plenary: “What Unites Us: Building Community in a Divided World,” where President Clinton will join activists Daryl Davis and Ibtihaj Muhammed to discuss how the next generation can take the lead in embracing the world’s growing interdependence, rather than rejecting it.

-  “Making it: Designing a Sustainable Future,” a plenary session moderated by Chelsea Clinton, which will address how innovations in social media, mobile technology, robotics, and artificial intelligence have fundamentally transformed our lives and the way we interact with each other.

-  “On the Move: Creating Opportunity for Migrants and Refugees,” a plenary discussion includingMadeleine K. Albright and David Miliband that will explore how commitment-makers can equip refugees and migrants with access to capital and the necessary training to become successful entrepreneurs and innovators themselves, while convincing more people in host communities of the benefits of these measures.

-  “Skills vs. Degrees,” a panel, including Joseph E. Aoun and Martha Kanter, will discuss the role of higher education in a time when the job market has become increasingly competitive and fluid, and in which artificial intelligence and advanced automation seems poised to upend traditional assumptions about employment.

- “Creating Buzz: Using Technology to Expand Your Impact,” a discussion moderated by Max Schorr, co-founder and co-CEO of GOOD Inc. and including Peter Hopkins, president and co-founder, Big Think that will explore traditional marketing and media campaigns, along with a wide range of digital storytelling and organizing strategies.

-  “LGBTQ Equality: Overcoming the Backlash,”moderated by Rebecca Adams, senior editor at Refinery29, will look at how we can support victims of abuse and violence and to speak out against discrimination, homophobia, and transphobia.

-  “Preventing and Responding to Sexual Assault on Campus,” which will explore how commitment makers can help create a culture in which sexual assault is not tolerated, promoting effective bystander intervention, self-defense training, and access to university resources and comprehensive care that support survivors of sexual assault. This conversation will be moderated by Amelia Harnish, senior features writer at Refinery29.

- “Is the Sharing Economy Sustainable?”, a conversation led by Adva Saldinger, associate editor at Devex, about how the sharing economy model scale can succeed around the world, and if it can be used to help raise living standards without reducing wages.
