Michael Christopher Estes was arrested after an unexploded device was found at Asheville Regional Airport on Friday morning. The FBIs criminal complaint states that Mr Estes admitted planting the bomb, which tests revealed contained Ammonium Nitrate, an explosive often used in terrorist attacks. Sterno, a form of jellied alcohol, was used as the fuel source. Mr Estes used a rigged an alarm clock, set for 6am, to strike matches that would have set it alight, the complaint states.

And we haven't heard a word about this attempted terrorist attack. The suspect (who has confessed to setting the device) says he 'wanted to start a war'. But he is a right-wing white guy. White guys, by definition, aren't terrorists. The are 'lone wolves' or 'white nationalists' or 'extremists' but never terrorists. In order to be considered a terrorists you have to be Muslim. Don't you suppose this would have been all over the news of it had been a non-white? But we can't have white guys being called terrorists, now can we?

(62,444 posts)It is the simplest improvised explosive to make and deal with, and its components are readily available.
While there is some monitoring of "unusual" purchases of ammonium nitrate, and some recordkeeping requirements, there's no problem diverting a lot of it from its ordinary agricultural use as a fertilizer.

Which would have happened if that device had gotten off.
Oh yeah, he was white so he was just expressing himself.

(45,433 posts)or some excuse for why we must remain in perpetual denial about white terrorism.
Some gun nut will sarcastically say ban farming and Wal-Mart.
But not a peep from our mainstream media or politicians about this. Wouldn't want to scare people into believe the monsters who want to kill us might look like anyone and live anywhere. That would be terrifying.
Maybe we can have Kellyanne Conway tell us about some imaginary massacres.

(18,621 posts)on US soil is his stated motive. That is political.
Terrorism.
Therefore he is a terrorist.

(10,828 posts)My eldest son picked up a group of hikers from the Asheville Airport Thursday night, transported the team to a local hotel and hit the trail on Friday morning. Small world. Way too small.
This Estes character 'wanted to start a war on US soil?' Which begs the question: why choose a small airport like Asheville? Probably thought it would be easier to escape notice and/or police surveillance.
Good one on the Asheville Airport authorities who caught this sucker on camera and averted what could have easily been a bloody catastrophe.
As for why the silence? Think that's been adequately answered above: Estes didn't fit the stereotype for blaring, condemning headlines. Wrong color, wrong religion. Unless there's something else afoot--the FBI keeping a close eye on these White Nationalists, wanting to make sure that Estes was a lone wolf.
Scary.
