Police in Detroit pulled a gun on a family because the Walmart employee mistakenly thought they tried to pass a fake $100.

Someone went to Dairy Queen and passed off a counterfeit bill that was so badly done that the counterfeiting charge was thrown out.

He got arrested for "attempting to obtain property by false pretense and uttering a forged instrument." Which is still going to land him in the Bowels of the Bastille, but they're state charges and not federal ones.

The largest retired denominations that were issued throughout the history of the US beyond the 100 notes are the 500, 1000, 5000, 10,000, and finally 100,000 note. 100,000 notes were not for public use and were meant to be used only between different branches of the Federal Reserve.

On the other hand, the other notes are essentially locked away in private collections, since they are out of print are quite old.
