President Trump is expanding the culture wars, launching new attacks against institutions that he views as liberal, elitist or both.
With his agenda stalled in Congress and his poll numbers sagging, Trump has kept his base engaged and the left inflamed by escalating feuds with key figures in sports, entertainment, tech and media, effectively dragging politics into every corner of public life.
Trumps aim is straightforward: To convince voters that there is a privileged class that scoffs at their patriotism and cares more about political correctness and diversity than ordinary Americans, their traditions and their economic plight.
The presidents allies say hes guided in this fight by the same instincts that got him elected. Trumps relentless attacks, they say, cut to the heart of Trumps appeal. The reality is that, to the average American voter, esoteric policy is not very digestible, said Sam Nunberg, a former Trump aide. But culture is policy and the president understands that.

(9,664 posts)Not because of the Dotard but in spite of him. I have to add that he is not the only cause.
I'm in my mid sixties. I have said "Happy Holidays" for most of that time.
It is the Holiday Season.
Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, those are the old ones now add in Kwanza and maybe others I don't realize, I'm not religious at in any respect and recognizing religious intent is not a talent I have.
Just saying "Merry Christmas" always seemed wrong. So Happy Holidays it is and will be.

(1,748 posts)"Democrats argue that the president is doing lasting damage to the country by needlessly stoking divisions at a time of extreme political polarization. They believe time is on their side as older, white voters give way to a more diverse and socially liberal electorate as millennials come of age."
This is a mistake.
Frightened, bigoted older white voters are being replaced with frightened, bigoted younger white voters who are just as hateful and bigoted, and just as likely to vote for another Trump.
Ignorance, fear, and hate move from one generation to another waiting for old white bigots to die off is a bad strategy.

(31,261 posts)Not saying Merry Christmas does not ruin Christmas for a person that loves Christmas.
The right love to call other snowflakes, but they are the biggest snowflakes by miles:
Some examples:
Gerrymandering
Criticize social programs but not trillions to big oil and other big Corps.
Talk about their religious rights being taken away while they actively work to suppress anyone else's rights.
The list can go on, but I don't have all day.

(63,221 posts)in large cities, including NYC, where many people are not Christian. It just naturally seemed like the right thing to say to people.
Besides, Happy Holidays encompasses all winter holidays - Christmas, Yuletide, Solstice, New Year's Eve and Day, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. Christmas is only one day, so it seems strange to wish someone a "Merry Christmas" during the season unless you wish someone that greeting on December 25th only. Maybe Christmas eve as well.
Anyway, I think the whole debate is stupid. Happy Holidays was never meant to offend anyone, it was only meant to be inclusive. This is just another example of the deranged Christian right trying to claim victim-hood once again.
