"We, the undersigned, urge the Womens March to reconsider giving Sen. Bernie Sanders a headlining role at the Womens Convention on October 27. The convention represents the first gathering of its kind for 40 years, putting it at the center of an intersectional feminist movement. For an event of this kind to center a white, male politician over emerging women leaders, particularly those of color, is very disappointing to us.
We showed up in droves from around the country to march in Washington, New York, Los Angeles, and many other cities because we believe that this country cannot move forward without womens voices and womens rights. We marched because the 2016 election put an admitted sexual predator in the White House, and made women in this country and around the world less safe. That day was filled with anger, but also with a deeply shared hope that in resisting together, we could save our country from the devastating impact of a Trump administration. "

(94,502 posts)...Perhaps the message should come from the attendees?

(35,454 posts)They can do what they want...they've made their position about women amply clear....which is shorthand for they've made their bed, let them sleep in it.

It is there. Take it or leave it...sorry I signed it now. I will add thought that those who say women didn't care about having a woman speak at a women's convention are dead wrong...thousands have signed this petition.

(5,272 posts)I just do not get this shit. People, champions of women's rights are going to be speaking. Even if you think they made a mistake with Sanders, this effort to punish is absurd and is the far more divisive component of this story.

(68,552 posts)However, to open the woman's convention with a white make speaker...I just don't get it.

(68,552 posts)They claimed to invite Dem women, but I don't believe...there carefully worded statements...nowhere do they explicitly state they asked Democratic women to this shindig. They say nice things about Maxine and co-opt her words...but no mention of her speaking until after the controversy begins.

It may not change anything but maybe it will and I can take the 30 seconds it took to sign without giving up on the Resistance.
