House Democrats think theyve found a Republican to demonize during next years midterm election, and its not Donald Trump.
In a nod to the Republican presidents enduring popularity with his white working-class base, Democrats are preparing a campaign that focuses just as much on Paul Ryan, the GOP speaker of the House whose own standing with Trump voters has suffered as Republicans struggle to pass major legislation through Congress.
Democrats say the Republican lawmaker better represents a dysfunctional Washington especially in an election where the party will fight in conservative-leaning districts where Trump performed well just a year ago.
On the battlefield we have, we have to target districts where Donald Trump performed quite well and talk to people about Speaker Ryan, said Tyler Law, spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the political arm of House Democrats. A message about establishment Washington Republicans is very powerful and does not alienate voters.

(7,309 posts)I voted for Hillary, but I'll be damned if I ever vote again for this party if they are afraid of Trump's base.
Don't scold me. If the Dems are such cowards, I can't possibly support them.

'I just heard the news, and holy cow, it's big:
Thanks to you, we outraised Paul Ryan's campaign last quarter. He raised about $330,000 from big donors and special interests while we raised about $1.1 million from 38,096 people with an average donation of $28.
Wow. That's almost unbelievable. I am so proud -- and grateful -- to be a part of what we've done. When working people come together, there is truly nothing we can't accomplish.'

(108,959 posts)That will put the Dems in charge of House committee chairmanships, and will quickly lead to an impeachment proceeding. It will also prevent the GOP from passing bills with no Democratic support.

(68,471 posts)But you didn't just say that ...you attacked House Dems...those we are trying to elect. Running against Paul Ryan who is already unpopular might help in some states.

(7,309 posts)Since when is disagreeing called attacking? OK, maybe calling them idiots was a bit much, but I want the Dems to win.

That's called a qualifier. At most you can call it a threat, but not an attack.

And there is so much truth to use against him that the American people NEED to know that there is absolutely no need to "demonize" him. Just reveal what he and his partners are up to.
They DO absolutely intend to destroy
Social Security
Medicare
VA
Unemployment Insurance
EPA
and hundreds of smaller but critically important programs people tend to forget about, like
Centers for Disease Control
Community energy, development and service block grants
Global Climate Change Initiative
Ryan is not only much farther right than the typical conservative and the typical voting Republican, he is just one of many extremists our state and national governments have been packed with. Connecting this insidious conspiracy to a nationally known top Republican official is not only a good strategy but a very necessary one. Trump is not one of them -- they can't be hurt by taking him out, or by Pence going down with him -- because Ryan is next in succession to the presidency.

(14,565 posts)A Cuban family lives next to me in Miami. They are three generations and dependably Democratic. But the mother likes and trusts Paul Ryan. I speak with her son about it frequently. He is incredibly frustrated. Every time Ryan is on camera his mother will say something positive about him, so he has to scold his mother and emphasize that Ryan is really a snake.

(10,621 posts)The problem isn't just Trump. It's the whole damned Republican Party.
Slick politicians like Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio have many fooled into thinking that they actually care about working class families. They do not, and we need to rip the masks off these charlatans. The voters need to know what these clowns really stand for.

(972 posts)Because this strategy is going to fall flat if a Bannon backed insurgents like a Roy Moore gets the party nomination for a particular seat.
It will be interesting to see how pissed off the Republican base is at the establishment.
