Look Out! Driverless Cars Are Coming to Manhattan in 2018.

Self-driving Chevys are coming to the streets of Manhattan, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday.

General Motors and its subsidiary Cruise Automation will use the country’s busiest streets, teeming with pedestrians and bicycle riders, as a testing ground for Level 4 autonomous vehicle technology. Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt said the city’s density provides “new opportunities to expose our software to unusual situations.”

How do you say “I’m walkin’ here!” in code?

The trial, set to begin in early 2018, will look similar to what Waymo and other companies have undertaken in California: Cars will carry an engineer in the driver’s seat and a supervisor in the passenger’s seat. Even so, as Uber’s brief foray onto San Francisco streets demonstrated, a human driver ready to take control is no guarantee the car will obey traffic rules. (On the other hand, GM’s software is probably more likely to let a pedestrian cross the street than your average Jersey driver trying to get to the Holland Tunnel.)

I'm not talking about the safety features that can enhance a regular car (with a driver in it). We were talking about this on the way to work today, and we hit on three angles - I'm sure there are more, but this is what we came up with.

1) The gee-whiz factor that tech people love so much.

2) People want all the convenience of driving in a car, but they don't want to have to actually learn to drive one.

3) To eliminate jobs.

injuries and deaths. Humans are terrible drivers AI can do the job a lot better. As far as eliminating jobs there are a lot of jobs going to be eliminated due to automation no need to single out autonomous driving.

And maybe bump the lowest common denominator up a bit by removing from the driver's seat those who do not understand physics and think slow and safe are the same thing.

I'm not against the enhanced safety features, but a lot of them seemed design to keep bad drivers on the road (some of the ads I see are shocking in that regard).

A driverless car that requires a driver isn't, you know, driverless.

My real point is do you think that autonomous driving is going to result in more injuries and deaths than human driving? For my part I can't wait for humans with there distractions and poor reflexes to be out of the driver seat.

I swear New Yorkers believe that if they blow the horn constantly, it will eventually create enough air pressure to push other vehicle out of the way.
