WASHINGTON U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions's testimony Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee was his first this year and he touched on a variety of topics, including:
Russia Sessions rejected any suggestion that he colluded with Russian officials while advising Trumps campaign, calling such assertions an appalling and detestable lie. Sessions has recused himself from any role in the ongoing Russia inquiry because of his prior contacts with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak which were not disclosed during his confirmation hearing.
FBI director Sessions said would not discuss the content of his conversations with President Trump about the May firing of FBI Director James Comey, He declined to answer whether Trump had discussed firing Comey to lift the cloud of the Russia investigation. Robert Mueller, the special investigator looking into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia, may be exploring whether Trump tried to obstruct justice in firing Comey. Trump initially claimed he fired Comey for his mishandling of the investigation into his 2016 presidential rival's email server.
Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., pressed Sessions on his failure to disclose his contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the attorney generals confirmation hearing in January.
"I conducted no improper discussions with Russians at any time," Sessions said. "Thats been the suggestion that you raised, Sen. Franken."
