So we take our granddaughter out for her birthday and who do you think is there?

She's turning 3 tomorrow, so we took her for a day out. A trip to the Children's Museum, and a fancy toy store, both on the main drag in Middletown, CT (Wesleyan University). Downtown seemed overly crowded, but we managed to find a parking place right at the museum entrance, which was also near the back door to the Wesleyan book store and the toy store. Two big black vehicles (an Escalade and a tricked-out minivan) with NY plates were parked out back, with several guys in black suits milling about. We walked around to the front of the store and the sidewalk had a queue a couple blocks long. Police, squad cars, and barricades everywhere, and more guys in black suits. Even a couple of protestors. We had to cut through the line to get into the toy store. That's when we found out that Hillary was next door signing books at the Wesleyan book store.

We don't have cable tv, so I rarely see any local news, and had no idea this was going on. I'm still baffled as to how we were able to park just a few yards away from the Secret Service and her limo detail. And our parking meter had 6 1/2 hours left on it when we pulled in, as did many of meters in front of the cars around us. Weird.

Anyway, friends said we should have taken our granddaughter in to get her picture taken with Clinton, and get a book signed -- that she'd appreciate it some day. Meh...she's THREE. We stopped next door for lunch and virtually everybody in the restaurant was wearing a Hillary shirt, fawning over their freshly-signed books, and/or telling stories about meeting her. It was a pretty big deal.

I really did want to go in and meet Clinton and get a picture, but it didn't seem like a fun way to make a three year old spend her birthday. The Children's Museum, lunch, and the toy store were plenty memorable.

I hope to meet Hillary some day. The only President and First Lady I have ever met were the Carters, a long time ago.

I am sure she will treasure those pictures, even though it meant nothing to her at the time.
