Or just wasn't decent period.
Remember what he said about them then?
I'll wait right here for your answer.

Answer: "Because he's a Christian gentleman."
It was true then. It is true now.

(58,785 posts)because Bernie Sanders reminded me of him. In both cases, it was sort of mostly true but also a major whopper. Something I really didn't like because I strongly object to candidates trying to work me for a fool, but I did vote for him.
I also remember that, not as much as Sanders but almost, his colleagues wouldn't support him. He simply wasn't seen as party leadership material, much less good candidate and presidential, but he very competently, and surprisingly, pursued a strategy that bypassed need for their support.
This sounds as if I am not a Carter admirer, and yet I am, with limits. I admire him greatly for some admirable facets and wince over less-than-admirable others.
The second half is looking forward to some examples for the OP, btw, because I haven't and will never forgive him for badmouthing Hillary in 2016. He also owns Trump's election.

(18,402 posts)the criticism about his membership in a Baptist Church that at the time prohibited African Americans from worshipping there. Although he claims to have opposed the discriminatory policy, he didn't resign from the church (until many years later), so it was a fairly reasonable criticism at the time. He could've done more on that front.

(12,618 posts)to the underhanded, anti-American, fascist tactics of what at the time was the Reagan campaign, soon to be the Reagan administration, thanks in no small part to him choosing to be "decent."
Maybe if he had actually called them out more on the deal they made with Iran to prevent American hostages from being released to hurt Carter, we wouldn't be in this situation today. In fact, maybe staying silent on the issue isn't really the decent thing to do at all.

(51,550 posts)Trump is not going to make him his NK negotiator. Carter is just going to lose credibility.
Being "decent" to your adversaries does not require bending the facts for them. He did not have to say what he said. I am very disappointed in him.

Only with the individuals who hold literalism as the only valid method of inferring meaning. Fundies, I s'pose, is the trendy pejorative for them these days.
