5. I've never been able to figure out how otherwise intelligent people

get suckered into these cults. But it seems to happen pretty often - some self-appointed "guru" or "messiah" somehow manages to convince people that he (it's usually "he" ) has the answers to whatever is wrong with their lives, and then he cuts them off from their families and takes their money. I don't get it.
