(3,827 posts)Bill Browder, an American-born businessman who has become an outspoken and hated enemy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was banned by the United States on Saturday, with the U.S. State department revoking his visa on the same day that Putin demanded the international police agency Interpol track down Browder and arrest him for what Putin called illegal acts.
Browder has been the leading advocate of the Magnitsky Act, a program of sanctions against Russia that targets specific Russian officials and business figure who have been linked to human rights violations. The United States, Great Britain, and Estonia all have passed Magnitsky Act sanctions, which freeze the assets of targeted Russians as well as denying them visas and imposing other restrictions.
On Thursday, Canada added itself to that list, adopting its own Magnitsky Act a move which outraged Putin, who slammed the Canadian passage of the Magnitsky Act as very unconstructive political games.
The Magnitsky Act is named for Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who in 2008 exposed an alleged theft of $250 million in tax money, apparently stolen by top Russian officials and business figures. Magnitsky was working as a lawyer for Browders Moscow-based private equity firm, Hermitage Capital Management when he exposed the massive corruption scheme and was soon arrested by Russian authorities on tax fraud charges charges that Browder says were fabricated as a way to silence Magnitsky.

(14,971 posts)Russia has placed a prominent British businessman on the Interpol wanted list. President Vladimir Putin is understood to have sanctioned the move against Bill Browder, who has led an international campaign against Russia over the killing of the jailed Moscow lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky.
On Wednesday Canada became the latest country to pass a Magnitsky Act, targeting officials who have committed gross violations of human rights. The move infuriated Putin, who accused Canada of playing unconstructive political games and later name-checked Browder for pursuing what the Russian president described as illegal activity.
On Saturday it emerged that Russia had placed the US-born British citizen on Interpols list, exploiting a loophole that lets countries unilaterally place individuals on its database used to request an arrest. Browder said he was alerted to the move by an email from the US department of homeland security, stating his global entry status had been revoked. Further calls confirmed he had been added to Interpols list via an arrest demand, known as a diffusion.
Moscow has a habit of using Interpol against its enemies and has previously used the global police organisation to pursue what many western governments view as a vendetta against Browder. Putin tried three times between 2012 and 2015 to get Interpol to issue arrest orders against Browder, but failed to convince the organisation that it did not have political motives.

Why do the Europeans let Putin play games with people like this without doing any investigating?

Mr. Browder says that the British government has "not been very robust" in pushing back against the mobsters...so, are all the Europeans powers-that-be on the take, along with god knows who else? Who tf knows, it's all too much, eh -

I am waiting for more info before getting all worked up.
