For christs sake - its Nancy Reagan all over again!!!
This whole "plan" is a huge nothing burger!
They even had Melania - dressed like the Grim Reaper - do the intro!
Pretty clear he has failed to grasp the difference between the current Opiate problem and broader problem of drug abuse.
A "drug free society" is not what this about...

(17,984 posts)Someone needs to take that and rework the narration to be "This is Republicanism. This is your brain on Republicanism. Any questions?"

(17,984 posts)Only this time around, the butter is Republicanism.
Dotard would watch it and say, "Mmmmm, butter and eggs. I need a red button on my desk for butter and eggs."

(51,565 posts)I did read the scroll at the booth of the screed which said, "45 declares a national health emergency". I thought that a more accurate scroll should read, "45 IS a national health emergency" since he has caused more illnesses and deaths due to his ACA and subsidies repeal, the lack of disaster relief efforts in Puerto Rico, and the millions who never had depression/anxiety on a daily basis since Nov 8th.

(82 posts)Good or bad on other issues, this does hit him personally and close to home, I have no doubt about his sincerity regarding addiction and the damage it can cause. He did lose a sibling, and seems to have been deeply affected; he's avoided drugs and alcohol his whole life as a result.
That said, comparing the current Opiate problem with the 80s war on drugs isn't a perfect comparison. The issue in the 80s was more about violence toward others (prior to the drug gangs committing high profile violence, the drug problem was largely ignored), the current problem is unique for several reasons.
First of all, Opiate addicts are dying in unbelievable numbers. I'm a first responder, and used to get maybe one overdose a month a few years back. We're now getting several a DAY, and not only are there tons of deaths, but the ones that are revived are putting a huge drain on resources...tying up police, EMS, and hospital personnel, and the expense of the "antidote," Naloxone, can approach a few THOUSAND dollars per week...per addict (if they're revived more than once, as they often are). This is not practically sustainable, and even if it were, it's tying up an unbelievable amount of resources that could be used to do a lot of good elsewhere.
Secondly, a large number of opiate addicts get hooked through no fault of their own. Doctors are way too quick to prescribe opiates, and as a result, people with no desire to do drugs recreationally are becoming junkies simply by following their doctors' orders to manage pain from injuries or chronic illnesses. The people we're finding overdosed are house wives, high school kids, and professionals...not lifelong drug abusers who got a bad dose through dumb luck. I know it's wrong to make these moral judgements, but it's a lot harder to find sympathy for someone who chooses to do heroin recreationally...it's a lot easier when it's a mother of 3 that got a script for Tylenol 3 for a broken ankle 2 years ago.
And apologies for typos here, hard to proof read on my phone, but wanted to chime in on this issue, it's one I also feel a bit passionate about.

(204,715 posts)I live in a fairly small town - Northeastern NY - and we hear about overdoses (and arrests) nearly every day. I agree that it's become a national epidemic. I also know people who have died from overdoses, know even more who can list numerous friends who have died. I also know people in treatment and those who work with them, but it's like a runaway train, not nearly enough.

(4,835 posts)I heard the Fentanyl part - but that was mostly in regard to China and the black market...
He said he would ban a drug that is evil - and didn't name it...it had to a legal script in the context he spoke of it.

(31,106 posts)All painkillers are needed to kill pain, but what we will do, especially with that stupid FUCK in the WH is we will punish those who NEED painkillers.
I am sure that is what will end up happening.
Oxycontin was made to addict and profit, so I guess you could get rid of that, maybe.
Fentanyl patches are a very necessary drug for those who NEED it.
Morphine, etc. NEEDED
