Last night, early morning, I had the privilege of again experiencing the midnight showing of the late night, double feature picture show that is Rocky Horror at the historic Belcourt Theater in Nashville.
Nashville may be a blue dot in a sea of evangelical/fundamentalism, but damn that blueness was a welcome refuge last night, which speaks to the spirit of what makes Rocky so special.
An hour before the show opened, people were lined up outside the theater, many in costume, despite the unusually cold fall night.
Prior to the show, the lead actor read a statement from the shows organizer which essentially laid out what made/makes Rocky, in that the midnight shows were always a safe forum for people of all backgrounds: Gay, straight, trans, weirdos, freaks, geeks to be themeselves, without judgement. That sense of belonging and empowerment was, for some, first experienced at those midnight shows. That feeling of community was especially appreciated, at least for me, last night. To hear a theater full of folks cheer when the impromptu call out of Is Donal Trump a White Supremacist?...to which The Expert replied That is a fact, to overwhelming audience laughter....and Dr Frank N Furter was ask What do you think of President Trump, it was incredible to hear the roar of the crowd as Tim Curry glibly said I think we can do better.
As the show let out at nearly 2am, it felt like the end of a family reunion of long lost family members. Folks were hugging and laughing and cheering as we went back into the reality that is our daily lives. It was an irreligious, offensive, unrepentantly glorious gathering, yet the evening...err early morning, was a great inspiration and reminder that , even here in the Buckle of the Bible Belt, the home of the Southern Baptist Convention, and...hell, even a gathering of white supremacists that was shut down by protest earlier in the day....even here, the resistance is alive and thriving.

(82 posts)It was the only way my parents would let me stay out past midnight, lol. Great memories, and truly the most eclectic group of people I've ever been a part of.
I'm way too old to stay up that late anymore...maybe I'll watch the DVD and trash my living room with toast and a squirt gun, lol.

(16,858 posts)It was pretty freaking funny that they had signs posted at the door which said essentially No squirt guns, No throwing rice or confetti, No silly string... yet, once inside...guess what they handed out?? You guessed it..all the acccessories needed for the show, the only two rules were Dont be an asshole...and Dont throw anything that hits the screen....it was an awesome night!

(16,858 posts)Oh, come on Brad, admit it, you liked it didn't you? There's no crime in giving yourself over to pleasure. Oh, Brad, you've wasted so much time already!
Lol! Hope you enjoy!
He just thinks it is stupid. I don't think he really gets what it really is. It's OK, he certainly supports everyone flying their own flag he just does not get inside this show. He knows enough to respond with "dammit Janet".
I am still pissed that there is no way I will ever (too old now) or ever was capable of rocking a bustier like Tim Curry. My my my.

(16,858 posts)My wife doesnt get it either, but shes a good sport and encourages me to hang with my best friend who Ive known since we were like 7 and is like my brother...the kids call him Uncle...he got the tickets for the show last night!
As for that bustier???? Just rock it...there were folks of all ages and sizes in bustiers last night...you could even go descrete and wear the bustier under a surgery gown a la Dr Frank!! No one was mocked or laughed at for their costumes, other than the guys wearing whitey tighties with an shirt...and they werent mocked really, it was just so damn cold that it was impressive theyd have the dedication to pull off that costume!

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away, God said let there be lips, and
there were, and they were good.

(16,858 posts)It was tough to control myself in not posting some of the more offensive/irreverent callbacks...but youre right, most would result in a ban here!

(6,110 posts)Was helping tear down after a big black tie charter event. Happened to have Tim Currys Fearless album on my phone. Cranked up I Do the Rock. Had recently converted the vinyl to digital.
I have seen RHPS an excessive number of times, sometimes in strange settings. I remember once in Paris with a very quiet audience eating ice cream and looking bewildered. There were maybe a dozen Americans who knew what was going on. The French subtitles were really interesting. Saw the original RHS on stage in London.
... and meaning.

(16,858 posts)So Im jealous that you have the Fearless album on vinyl but Im insanely jealous that you saw the original production on stage in London!!!! That must have been incredible!
As for seeing the movie in France....cant imagine that A mental mind fuck can be nice. translates well into other languages...lol
