Approval rating lowest of presidency

BY ALICIA COHN - 10/29/17 09:16 AM EDT

Just 38 percent of Americans approve of President Trump’s job performance, according to a new poll released Sunday.

A majority — 58 percent — disapprove of Trump's performance as president in the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll.

That rating is the lowest approval rating of any modern president at this point in his tenure, according to the pollsters. The same poll found former President George W. Bush had 88 percent approval at this point in his presidency, former President Barack Obama had 51 percent and former President Bill Clinton had 47 percent ...

Self-identifying independents polled shifted in their opinion of Trump, from 41 percent approval in September to 34 percent in October. Support from white adults without a college degree dropped from 58 percent to 51 percent ...

2. In that particular poll anyway. Trump's ceiling (and floor) has always been somewhere in the 30s.

I don't see that changing. The truest thing he ever said was that he wouldn't lose a single supporter if he shot someone on 5th Avenue in broad daylight.

9. Maybe they're right and it'll hit the 20s.

But his approval rating was in the 30s when he was campaigning and it's in the 30s now. When it was in the 40s, I think that was the direct result of a honeymoon period afforded any new POTUS. In other words, his true approval rating has almost always been in the 30s (when you average the various polls and account for margin of error), from the time he was running against Clinton until now.

Trump has a cult following. Perhaps that following will dwindle to 20-some percent of the electorate, but I'm not banking on that.
