(4,510 posts)there were no similar photos taken of Mrs. Surratt post-arrest. She was also allowed to stay veiled during the trial.

So maybe it isn't "interesting" after all. Some things just are, you know?

Not that being the first woman executed by the Federal government was a great achievement for feminists but Americans are so ignorant of their own history that most probably don't know that any one was executed for conspiring to kill Lincoln (most think John Wilkes Booth was the lone assassin - that's what I was taught). Might as well mention all the alleged conspirators.

(9,213 posts)Who think Mary Surratt was not aware of the plot to kill Lincoln and helped Booth by running errands for him, not to mention lying to the police when confronted about it...but there is some disagreement about whether her involvement was deserving of the death penalty, especially for a woman at that time.
Still amazing photos and an amazing story though.
