Americas Most and Least Popular Senators (Guess who is #1)

https://morningconsult.com/2017/10/31/americas-most-and-least-popular-senators-october-2017/

Along with President Donald Trump’s declining support across the country, approval ratings for nearly all senators went down in their home states during the third quarter. The period overlapped with several unsuccessful Republican-led attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

According to Morning Consult’s latest Senator Approval Rankings – compiled from a poll of 255,120 registered voters in 50 states from July 1 to Sept. 30 – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is yet again America’s least popular senator. Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) remains America’s most popular senator. Full methodology available here.

In Kentucky, one-third of voters approve of McConnell’s job performance, while 55 percent of voters said they disapprove — more than any other senator. In Vermont, 71 percent of voters approve of Sanders, while 22 percent disapprove of Sanders, who ran a stronger-than-expected race in 2016 for the Democratic presidential nomination.

with the voters.

And he wasn't in a crowded field, like the Republicans. It was just Bernie and Hillary.

10. This is data from his constituents. So I doubt they need the 2016 primary ...

... to know who he is.

This isn't one of the several other polls that show him to be the most popular politician on the planet.

11. He still got far more exposure inside his own state than most other Senators do. Vermont voters

were exposed to all those TV debates and the nightly news shows, and that helped build his popularity there.

15. His approval in this poll: 71%. His share of the vote in 2012: 71%.

His run for President doesn't seem to have been a big factor in his standing with Vermont voters.

Vermont is a fairly progressive state. In the 2012 elections, the Democratic candidate won by 20 points. Obama beat Romney by 36 points. Bernie beat his Republican opponent by 46 points -- even without ever having run a national campaign.

5. Methodology
Tue Oct 31, 2017, 07:08 PM
Oct 2017

Respondents vote approval/disapproval only on THEIR OWN senators, not their favorite nationwide.

"In each poll, Americans indicated whether they approve or disapprove of the job performance of President Donald Trump, their state’s governor, both of their U.S. senators, their member of Congress and their mayor (if they live in a city with more than about 10,000 residents). For each question, they could answer strongly approve, somewhat approve, somewhat disapprove, strongly disapprove, or don’t know / no opinion."

8. That makes sense, of course. Participants would most likely know their own Senators' records best.

It also produces useless results.

Thanks for the info.

14. Yep. It only tells who's most popular in his/her own state

The article gives the impression that the respondents were picking their favorite senator nationwide.

But not sure this poll means anything. Bernie has a lot of name recognition, and he's popular in his home state, but lots of senators are popular in their home state.

Just an observation.
Edited to point out that a 4% approval in NY or a 2% in CA would mean more voters than 71% in Vermont.

Those not in power and not attempting to legislate will be most popular. The trend is consistent.
