(101,149 posts)Trump won Catholics by 7 points, and Protestants by 19 points. He lost the Jewish vote by 47 points, the 'other faiths' vote by 33 points, and the religiously affiliated vote by 42 points. He won Mormons by 36 points.
The OP does not say "all Christians". But it's a simple fact that being Christian was one of the major indicators of voting for Trump. And the OP points out Trump's opposition to the basics of the faith's behaviour.

(101,149 posts)If Christians had voted in the proportions of non-Christians, Trump would have lost in a landslide. The collective vote of Christians elected Trump. Tens of millions of Christians voted for Trump despite his morals.

(3,467 posts)It's a great system for thrashing anyone you want because there's no way to be perfect; even a newborn is tainted with original sin. They also know God forgives (their kind). I'm also becoming convinced it's another dog whistle to identify those heathens who are not supporting "Judeo-Christian" values (whatever those are).

(1,257 posts)Huh...
There's another juicy bone of contention for you.
I cannot help but wonder if some of the White Racist oriented so called Christians even know that Jesus was Jewish, and that the "Judeo" bit references Judism.
But then again, as Mineral Man referenced in an earlier post, Christianity has far more flavors than Baskin-Robbins or Ben and Jerry's ever did.

(12,858 posts)Lindsey says Hispanic Catholics voted for HRC, and that why Catholic vote as a whole went for HRC.
He's been tracing the prevalence of white supremacy in conservative white Christians, Catholics and Evangelicals alike
He grew up So Bapt in Arkansas, became Catholic, has lived-studied-taught in US and Canada. He now lives with his huband back in Arkansas. For some years he's been documenting how Evangelicals and the Catholic Bishops have formed a united pro conservative, pro GOP group.

(1,474 posts)One of the most dangerous groups in America is the "Christian Right". Religion can provide cover for hatred and greed. Just look at how Ku Klux Klan often pretended to be religious. If one claims to be a Christian but does not know and support the teaching of Jesus, are they really Christians?
Many evil people feign love for God. Or for Allah. Christianity is no different than Islam in this regard. Religion hides and justifies their evil and they can always claim divine forgiveness if exposed.

(841 posts)Some voted for Trump because of the abortion issue or because of tax cuts or because of his views on immigration. Trump's personal failings were often dismissed by referencing Bill Clinton and his personal issues or by referencing Hillary Clinton's supposed ethical shortcomings (her emails!). Basically, if somebody is a Republican and a Christian they can always rationalize why they vote for the GOP even if the Republican candidate is as obviously unchristian as Trump.
I follow some Catholic websites and the comments sections are often vicious wars between Catholics over politics. And yet most people on both sides would consider themselves to be devout and orthodox in their beliefs. I notice the same thing in real life. I have friends who are devout Catholics but they differ radically when it comes to politics.

(50,447 posts)I'm going to whip a very important five-word phrase on you.
The end justifies the means.
People who voted for Trump want Christianity - THEIR version of the faith - to be the law of the land.
The Bible says, "before I formed you in the womb, I knew you." So they want abortion banned in all situations, even if the fetus is killing the mother. (1)
The Bible says, "if a man will not work, he shall not eat." So they want all forms of public assistance banned. (2)
It is late so I'm not going to recite all the misinterpreted phrases from the Bible, but the Religious Right bases their idea of government upon them. Trump has promised to give the Christian Right any damn thing it wants, so they voted for him.
(1) This phrase comes from the Book of Jeremiah, which is a book about a prophet. The entire passage (Jeremiah 1.4-5) makes it very clear what it's about: Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." Simply put, he's talking to one guy - the prophet Jeremiah - and not to everyone in the world.
(2) This is from 2 Thessalonians. It seems the Apostle Paul brought a bunch of people to Thessalonia to do some labors, and a few of Paul's followers refused to work. They just ran around all day acting like a Trump supporter. Paul was simply telling his new friends, "hey, don't feed those people."
