(22,316 posts)There's a "woman = savage" line of thinking that to this day still informs some of our institutions and legal history. It's a complicated metaphor better handled by rigorous writings than a cartoon, IMO.

I weep for my children and my grandchildren
and yours too
whathehell
(29,065 posts)so for You there's no difference between "fucking" female humans and "fucking" grass and trees, right?.
Try "weeping" for that half of humanity that's belittled and abused every day -- I'd guess even your "children and grandchildren" number among them

(29,065 posts)I have only your word for it, but a female "accustomed" to her second class status wouldn't be an anomaly in any case. It manifests in all oppressed populations.

(29,065 posts)Nor am I sure anyone else does...I would, in fact, challenge that assertion on the basis of what we know about indigenous Americans. Native Americans lived very low tech lives and were famous for their respect for nature...That said, most were as patriarchal in their social structure as the European settlers.

Yes, the earth is 'alive' but until I've seen it bleed or listened to it's screams and cries, my priorities will remain human.

(38,309 posts)Population growth stops in places where women have even minimal economic power and freedom to use birth control. Many of the so-called "first world" nations would have negative population growth without immigration.
Population growth also stops in places that have gone completely to hell.
As global warming makes previously inhabited places less habitable, there will be more places going completely to hell, even places within the 48 United States.

Oh well..Everyone knows female humans aren't that important, anyway.

(11,254 posts)try thinking about adding light, rather than heat, to a discussion.
No one, certainly not kpete, is implying that human beings of any kind aren't important. To the extent that we need a survivable habitat to live in, "nature's" importance is that it can sustain female humans.
whathehell
(29,065 posts)and I'd suggest that you at least attempt to put yourself in shoes you will never walk in, i.e. a woman's, before you start 'mansplaining' to her.. Just a thought.

WhiskeyGrinder
(22,316 posts)That doesn't make the metaphor valid, useful or helpful to either environmental efforts or the rights of women. I'm not a fan of ecofeminism, finding it too essentialist, unnecessarily dimorphic and rarely intersectional.

TITLE: Burning Times
Lyrics and Chords
In the cool of the evening, they used to gather
'Neath the stars in the meadow circling an old oak tree
At the times appointed by the seasons
Of the earth and the phases of the moon
/ Am - - - / G - Am - / :
In the center, stood a woman
Equal with the others and respected for her worth
One of the many we call the witches
The healers and the teachers of the wisdom of the earth
And the people grew through the knowledge she gave them
Herbs to heal their bodies, spells to make their spirits whole
Can't you hear them chanting healing incantations
Calling forth the wise ones, celebrating in dance and song
{Refrain}
Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Innana (3x)
/ Am G Am GAm / :
There were those who came to power, through domination
And they were bonded in their worship of a dead man on a cross
They sought control of the common people
By demanding allegiance to the church of Rome
And the Pope declared an inquisition
It was a war against the women, whose power they feared
In the holocaust against the nature people
Nine million European women died
And the tale is told of those, who by the hundreds
Holding together chose their death in the sea
While chanting the praises of the Mother Goddess
A refusal of betrayal, women were dying to be free
{Refrain}
****************Now the Earth is a witch, and the men still burn her
Stripping her down with mining, and the poisons of their wars
Still to us the Earth is a healer, a teacher, a mother
The weaver of a web of life that keeps us all alive***************
She gives us the vision to see through the chaos
She gives us the courage, it is our will to survive

I have never felt the term "Global Warming" was powerful enough
It is degradation of our planet for greed without regard for those that follow -human, animal, all carbon based creatures.
I believe the trees have spirit and I often think of them as friends, especially the old ones - which I seek out
They give me strength and sometimes I believe in their wisdom more than that of humans.
Art, is subjective, some did not like the toon. Some may not like your song. I am quite moved by it.
As I listen and type I wish I could verbalize better how worried I am for all of us.
Thank you again niyad, your song gives me some comfort.
niyad
(113,239 posts)you are correct--"global warming" does not quite do it. at the copenhagen climate summit, it was properly termed CATASTROPHIC CLIMATE CHANGE, C3. that is what I call it.
and, like you, I see the spirits, in the trees, in all living things. we have some lovely old ones here. and going into the redwoods. . . . . .
Peace
