(182,778 posts)Hippies lived a life very close to that if Jesus while the "I wear a suit to church every week" crowd could fell their own hypocrisy.

(30,736 posts)I thought there were too many stereotypes connected to the South. Stills and corn likker. Church on Sunday and debauchery on Saturday night. Old men and young girls, people screwing their cousins or sisters.
I still despise regional bigotry. But the "Bible belt around their knees" has been earned. They can't defend any of this. At least the ones who make excuses for Moore, the ones who will vote for him can't defend it!

(33,643 posts)... then you clearly were not 'there' at the time.
I wasn't (though I was alive) but my dad was right in the thick of the Summer of Love in SF, CA. And I've heard plenty of stories.
According to these stories, basically everyone was high/tripping most of the time, and everyone was screwing everyone, regardless of age (well, within reason). If you think the 'scene' didn't attract Ephebophiles en masse, you're fooling yourself, no offense.
What I mean is yeah 'these types' hated hippies quite a bit. But I'd say it's definitely less that they felt like the hippies were winning the Christ-like Sweepstakes, and much more that they were 'getting away with' getting loaded, and openly having relations with willing teenagers, whereas 'these types' had to hide what they were doing, and creepily manipulate (or even outright rape) them ... to get what they wanted.

(2,596 posts)I think there were many who were hippies because they rejected the establishment and really believed in the movement, and there were many who joined in over fear of Viet Nam, and like the sex and drugs. Now we call the second type Republicans.
Just something I've wondered about as I grew up in the shadow of that generation. My parents were a bit too old and "square" to join in and Viet Nam was done before I was 10.

(1,678 posts)I thought it was from Brother Dave Gardner, a comedian of southern humor that was kind of funny in the early sixties, but real racist in the late sixties.

(36,260 posts)... don't know if it's one of his books somewhere. Like a lot of humor, who knows if it's original ?
One of my favorite Mark Twain quotes can't be documented as ever having been said by him. :^/

....years ago is that all the ideology is a cover for racism. Racism is the one true note.
They've got no problem with Moore because he's a good supporter of racist policies too.

(14,167 posts)Started with the civil war (AL lost), continued with reconstruction (AL lost), 1901 constitution (AL lost - everyone in the world except the ignorant knew), Jim Crowe laws (AL lost), blue laws (AL is still feebly fighting and LOSING), civil rights (AL lost) and gay rights (AL lost).
The pattern is easily seen by anyone who can think critically - Alabama has lost everything - especially it's young and and vibrant potential leaders (SEE APPLE'S CURRENT CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER who makes more in a year than the whole state's budget). Alabama has always been a loser and is very proud of it.

Oh Alabama
The devil fools
with the best laid plan.
Swing low Alabama
You got spare change
You got to feel strange
And now the moment
is all that it meant.
Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track
Oh Alabama
Banjos playing
through the broken glass
Windows down in Alabama.
See the old folks
tied in white ropes
Hear the banjo.
Don't it take you down home?
Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track
Oh Alabama.
Can I see you
and shake your hand.
Make friends down in Alabama.
I'm from a new land
I come to you
and see all this ruin
What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union
to help you along
What's going wrong?

(4,460 posts)My husband tries to read John Archibald everyday. We havent seen any support for Moore in our parts, and in fact today I just saw my first Moore TV ad. We have seen a lot of Jones yard signs.
I saw a commentator yesterday on MSNBC, he said Joness success will depend on getting out the votes from blacks, urbanites and suburban soccer moms. That sounds about right.

(3,483 posts)John Archibald is a brave man to have written and published this, in hostile territory.
I truly love Alabama and the folks who really are good people down there, but sadly, even 45 years after I fled, I still have to tell people "Alabama is a great place to be FROM".
