Thus, if senator Menendez is found guilty and expelled

can the process be dragged until the new NJ Democratic governor takes office and appoints another Democrat?

Right now it appears to be a hung jury

I would think a mistrial would then result in a motion to dismiss, or a new trial with a new jury.

It's been my question, too, if it's Guilty, will it be CHRISPY filling the slot before January? Or the new Dem governor after January 16?

Or, really, will there BE an empty slot - how long before a Guilty verdict & and creating a vacancy? It's not automatic, is it?
