AL-SEN: The Governor Of Alabama Just Shot Down Republican Plans To Salvage The Senate Election

With the revelation that Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore was accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl when he was 32, Republicans have been in a panic over potentially losing what has been considered a virtually guaranteed seat in the Senate and edging closer to losing their control over half of Congress.

With almost all Republican Senators renouncing their endorsements of Moore and calling for him to drop out of the race, speculation is rampant that the party’s leadership will resort to drastic measures to prevent losing any ground to Democrats. Having already reached unprecedented lows in ethical behavior with their theft of a Supreme Court seat that rightfully was President Obama’s to appoint, Republican leadership has been searching for any solution to rescue their chances in an election that they see rapidly slipping from their grasp.

One idea that’s been floated is a write-in campaign for Luther Strange, the Trump-backed loser of the Republican primary who was appointed to the Senate seat that Jeff Sessions vacated when he was appointed Attorney General. However, having two Republicans on the ballot could split the vote and wind up delivering the election to Moore’s Democratic opponent Doug Jones.

Another idea is designed to get around the problem with the fact that Alabama law requires that any changes to the ballot must be made at least 76 days ahead of the election, meaning that it is impossible for Moore to be removed from the ballot by the Alabama Republican party, since the election is only 4 weeks away.

Some desperate party leaders have suggested that Alabama Governor Kay Ivey change the election date to enable just such a move.

Governor Ivey squashed their hopes today with an announcement that she would refuse to make any changes in the election schedule, according to The New York Times.

“Governor Ivey is not considering and has no plans to move the special election for U.S. Senate,” a spokesman, Daniel Sparkman, said in an email. This week, Ms. Ivey said that the allegations were “deeply disturbing” and that “the people of Alabama deserve to know the truth and will make their own decisions.”

And they know it.

I was struck by all the media who dishonestly spin all the Repub losses on Tuesday as rejection of Trump, not of the candidates themselves, of Trump. In spite of the fact that approval of Republicans and Congress is lowest ever, and they control Congress.

I don't buy it. And now Senator Moore's name will never be mentioned in coverage of congress without reminding voters of his depravity. And he and the media will make sure people don't forget he's there.

They say if you repeat something often enough people will believe it, and the Republicans can't seem to stop showing just how low and rotten they've become. It seems like maybe their corruption has hit a critical point where it's now spilling out everywhere and won't be contained.

If he drops out or loses, this would quickly go away long before the 2018 races heat up. If he wins, this sordid tale will be hung around every Republican's neck in races from coast to coast as additional details come out and are broadcast widely by a national media that eats stuff like this for lunch. All Republicans will be forced to comment on this. Those that try to duck it get branded as enablers. GOP = Grand Ole Pedophiles...and it will stick. This is even worse than the orange arse...hard to believe. The negative ads simply write themselves.

Best chance for Democratic victory is to split the republican vote. This is a great opportunity and a campaign for a write in vote for Strange should be mounted sooner rather than later.

Republicans by and large don't care about character issues or criminality. Their voting history shows that. They re-elected David Vitter of Louisiana, and voted molester Trump to be President.

A write-in campaign wouldn't work. Anything that requires the voter to do the work won't work. Too many don't follow news and just show up to vote Republican.

This would be an unexpected coup if the Democrat wins! Imagine. Alabama.

hear the most is "fake news". Here in Alabama, they believe what they want to believe. Period, end of the story. Facts be damned.

There is absolutely nothing they will not defend in order to stay in power.

Dealing with reality, Alabama will likely end up putting him in office. However, no matter how this plays out, this is a win for us.

If he wins, it will be used to get Democrats all around the nation elected next year. His win will hurt their party as a whole. It'll be disgusting to have such a horrid person serving on our Senate, but the title party of the pedophiles will carry a lot of weight going forward. It'll divide their party, and drive some voters to us, and even those who will not switch to vote for Democratic Party candidates will be disillusioned enough to sit out the next rounds of elections.

If Doug Jones wins, their majority is down to a single seat majority. 2018 doesn't look great for us just by the numbers. However we get this seat, and the tRump effect in play, they may just put the Senate in play for us in a year when it should have been a complete shut out for us. Certainly the potential gains they could have potentially gained in the Senate is off the table at the very least.

The only way they could salvage is find a way to get him out of the race, and get Strange on the ballot. So, I for one am glad that isn't happening.

Is that they see him as a righteous Christian firebrand who will bring American back to Jesus - the exact same thing that they believed - or at least told themselves - about Trump. But Moore has been described by former law professors as one of the biggest morons they ever had the displeasure of teaching, and being a moron is something else he has in common with Trump. Now, I'm not saying that Trump isn't have an effect and making (detrimental) changes, but he's been stymied by his own incompetence on a lot of things because he can't wrap his head around how government works and thinks he can do what he wants. This is another trait that is shared between Trump and Moore, who decided on his own to put up a 10 Commandments monument and tried to ignore the Supreme Courts marriage equality decision. However, there's a lot more power in the position of presidency than in a single senate seat so Trump has unfortunately gotten some stuff done. But if Moore gets elected, not only does he have a ton of baggage that will make even the senators that applauded David "Dress Me in Diaper" Vitter think twice about dealing with him, and that will be ANOTHER thing he has in common with Trump - poor relations with his colleagues. Also he's going to be the biggest moron in Washington since Quayle and stymied by all the Senate rules. He'll probably try to run roughshod over them but will get slapped down and ultimately be ineffective.

When the answer is just so base.

It's not about god, or beliefs, or party, or even America.

We made them "suffer" through 8 years of the black man in the white house, then had the audacity to try to foist that woman on them. For many of them, it's ALL about picking the candidates that will make us (the left and the media) suffer the most.

As evidence, just look at every single one of their defenses about things tRump or Moore has done. They never even bother to try to defend their politicians. It's always "but Obama", or "but Hillary", or "but Bill", then follow it up with some completely ridiculous false equivalency.

The more detestable their candidates are to us, the more they love them.

I've said again and again, the only crime that tRump, and now Moore could commit that would turn turn their supporters against them is doing something that the "left" and the "media" loves and approves of.

Seriously. That's what one woman said during an interview I saw. She's going to vote for him because God forgave him for molesting a child--otherwise he wouldn't still be on earth...

THAT is the level of logic at work here in some cases. Shit, under that same logic Manson should be walking free, and Hitler would be good to run for office if he was still alive.

Incredible.
