Yemenis rally, demand president face trial

(AP) SANAA, Yemen — Large crowds of Yemenis are rallying in major cities, demanding outgoing President Ali Abdullah Saleh be put on trial for the deaths of protesters killed during the country's uprising.

The protests come just a day after Saleh reversed his decision to leave Yemen, according to his ruling party. The decision may be an attempt to salvage his control over the regime as it is appears to unravel in the face of internal revolts and relentless street protests.

Tens of thousands marched in the streets of the capital Sanaa on Sunday, chanting that Saleh "must stand before a judge." Another big crowd of marchers echoed the chant in Taiz, Yemen's second largest city.

Activist Fathi al-Hamadi says the "only place for Saleh to go to is the court's dock."

like the best idea to me. It reminded me of how Iran degenerated after the Shah came here for medical treatment, leaving a vacuum, Kholmeini leaving his exile in Paris and returning to Tehran, the "students" taking over the American Embassy, the Hostage Crisis, and of course, the Reagan Administration. And yes, I could see a coterie of republican insiders going to Yemen to work out a deal that could affect the 2012 election like Nixon did in 1968 (S. Vietnam) and Reagan in 1980 (Iran).
