First the quote, "Every time we think we've hit the floor, something keeps welling up from yet another lower level . Arthur" To that I
say, "Still I Rise" Maya Angelou.

This hit home "The Bible Belt", "Oh it's ok you prudes, she's my cousin too." My grandmother said that at the age of 13, a neighbor, prosperous and over 30, asked her father and mother for permission to marry. She was not consulted, just given a choice of accepting the man's offer or be ostracized by her parents. It was disgusting then and nothing has changed in some geographic areas in 100 years and longer.

When I was a kid I remember an article about legal age of marriage across the country. I was 12, so it would have been 1959. I recall the horror I felt learning that in some parts of the South a girl of 12 could be married (or, married off) with her parents' consent -- because, what would I do if that were me? I couldn't even wrap my head around it being in the US instead of some deeply backward tribal region of the planet, where a girl had no expectations in life beyond herding goats.

But, as Mineral Man pointed out the other day -- what we are seeing in Alabama right now is how a patriarchal culture works. Evangelical "courtship" is much older men getting permission from the parents of underage girls who won't even get to finish high school. My addendum: You don't need burkas or hijabs to make the point.

He treated her badly, the details no longer matter. My grandmother had native American matriarchal ancestry.

I'm trying not to follow the Moore case too closely, but since it's in our faces 24/7 just now that's difficult. There is resonance for nearly every woman born -- we get gender-coded messages our whole lives, no matter where we live.
