Actually, my husband and I started watching that a few years ago and now we never miss it in the Olympics. Some might say it is boring or silly....what with the sweeping and sliding. But it actually is kinda fun to watch.
These Nigerian women bobsledders will, no doubt, be fun to watch. They look as serious about their sport as a heart attack. I hope they do well!

(3,280 posts)My team is actually the only undefeated team in our league this year! Having a bang-up season!
Always happy to talk about the mechanics of the sport. The sweeping may look odd, but it is vitally important!

(5,810 posts)It looks odd at first but once you observe them playing, you understand it is a game with precision and all the strange movements actually make a lot of sense. My husband and I are looking forward to Curling in the next Winter Olympics.
No chance of Curling where we live....NW Florida....unless someone brings a portable ice rink as they do in some places that are far too warm for a naturally occurring pond or lake.

(3,280 posts)I'll show you how the ice works (sort of... there's still lack of scientific consensus on that!)

(5,810 posts)My niece and her husband, who are both educators, who have spent 25+ years teaching college level teachers to be better educators. Making a problem a fun project that a group of students could work on is right up their alley. I enjoyed the video, too. And I am no scientist, but the video was engaging and informative! Thanks for sharing!

(11,843 posts)The surface of the ice is "pebbled", meaning that small drops of water are frozen to the surface of the ice. It's not smooth like a normal ice rink, skating of it would be horrible. If the ice were smooth, the stones would not travel nearly as far. The little bumps of the pebbled ice limit contact (thus friction) with the stones.
Any curling is going to be on a purpose made rink, almost exclusively indoors.
There's one in Daytona Beach, a couple in Atlanta, one in Mississippi - not much in your neck of the woods. There's a dozen or so within 15 miles of my house.

(64,960 posts)The sweeping looks to fatiguing.

(3,280 posts)But the way the team works, everyone throws two stones and then sweeps the other member's stones except for the skip. The skip is sort of the captain, and they have to plan the strategy for the end, call all of the shots, and hold their brooms on the ice as a target for all of the other team members, so they don't have to do as much sweeping (just a little in the house sometimes to clear an opponent's rock after the T line).

(64,960 posts)I ain't doing the sweeping! LOL!

(36,291 posts)There's a great deal of strategy that goes into it. And it's a sport where one doesn't have to be an elite athlete to compete in at the highest levels.

(101,294 posts)since, as the article itself admits, it's 2 or 4 people in a bobsled. They don't both telling us which that is - the former with a spare athlete, or is someone missing from the photo and writeup?

(1,336 posts)It's always wise to have a spare. Bobsledding is just a wee bit dangerous! Anyhow, good on them!
