We are who we are

I’m a middle-aged white male. I was molested as a kid.

By a male teen babysitter when I was 3 or 4. Later by a female teen neighbor when I was 10 or 11. Both over a period of time. Both were caught. I was young so I really don’t remember all the details. It’s like snapshots in my mind, bits and pieces here and there. Am I a little broken? Sure. But I am who I am and I refuse to let what happened to me define who that is.

I say this because of the number of accusations and insights into people we have had recently. From all over the country, every political and social spectrum. While some is expected, it has been an unending flood lately. These revelations are disturbing. Unsettling. Disappointing.
We cannot avoid the ugly truth that as human beings we are very flawed. Not just now. Always. This is not a new or recent phenomenon. It didn’t start happening in the last couple of years. My incidents were over 35 years ago. My point is to keep perspective, it is not everyone and it’s not everywhere and it not all the time.

As there always has been, there are good men and women in the world. People are not inherently good but there are good people. The world isn’t all bad and we can make things better.
Things are not always positive but good things are always possible.

Some of US can not move on to your admirable forgiveness until all that is ugly sees the light of day and is rebuked. I do not live in darkness, nor do I accept that greed cannot corrupt even the most pious.
