U.S. towns, cities fear taxpayer revolt if Republicans kill deduction

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - From Pataskala, Ohio, to Conroe, Texas, local government leaders worry that if Republican tax-overhaul plans moving through the U.S. Congress become law, it will be harder for them to pave streets, put out fires, fight crime and pay teachers.

A tax plan approved by the House of Representatives on Thursday would sharply curtail a federal deduction that millions of Americans can now claim for tax payments to state, county, city and town governments.

Ending that deduction, the local leaders say, could make their taxpayers, especially in high-tax communities, less likely to support future local tax increases or even tolerate local taxes at present levels.

This has been the republican strategy, with all their tax cuts, for decades. Strangle local government so they must raise taxes or cut essential services, then blame the cuts and tax increases on the local pols. Who cares as long as republicans hold the national offices. If passed, this will be a giant leap back to America's gilded age.

Teachers already are over educated, experienced, and worked yet UNDERPAID. Now they will not even get to deduct more than $250 from out of pocket expenses for school supplies.

CA ranks 46 out of 50 states in the amount of money they give to each student! We do not have art, music, nurses, librarians, psychologists, custodians, computer techs, printers, ink, paper, office staff, aides, etc in the 8th largest district in the country. And who does all the work that is still there even though the staff has been rescued for over 15 years now...the teachers of course who work 50+ hour weeks and get constantly sick. I taught my students to vote, respect others, be good citizens and to follow the golden rule. I hope they take those lessons with them and do not vote GOP.

we'll be paying twice.

Once at the state and local levels, and once at the Fed level.

That's a hell of a scam. There doesn't seem to be a limit to what these Crooks can come up with.

Defund local government, dumb down the population and privatize local institutions when it all goes to crap.
